A couple notes on Menzerna PO106FF vs. Blackfire Finishing Polish

Now having both in my posession (previously used 106FF over a year ago), I was able to test either side by side...

My findings were that they are the same product, verbatim. Color, texture, and performance, all equal. I tested them side by side via rotary and a black finishing pad.

Apply a quarter sized bead for a 2'x2' area and work in at 1200rpm. I did four overlapping, slow passes, then removed with an MF. As usual, I worked outside in partial sun. I got light dusting from either, no holograms, and a deep glossy, and a nearly defect free finish.

Call it what you want, but I see it like this: Having the BF alternative is nice because being the same product, you can buy it much cheaper and half the quantity. I see this being optimal for enthusiasts (this stuff goes FAR, btw). The whole "not safe for clearcoats pre-2006 is bologna". I use it often sans ill effects. My cliffs on it's performance are:

Cut: 4 of 10

Gloss: 10 of 10

Performance: 8 of 10

Hope this clears some things up. If you have any questions, fire away, I've got about 40 ounces of use under my belt now.

I have not used the 106FF, but I can say that the BF is top notch--the best FP that I have used--period.

Watch out in the humidity--it *can* be difficult to remove.

Joe: I feel PO85RD is a little bit better in terms of performance (no dusting), but it's not available anymore :(. I won't complain with 106FF as it's a show-stopper.

I need/looking for a very good finishing polish to use via pc. The clearcoat pre-2005 talk has me very wary of trying 106FF and at a loss as no 85rd available. Am a correct in understanding that the BFFP is the same to 106FF IYO? If so (I respect your stuff G35stilez :2thumbs: ), then that's good enough for me, I get a great finishing polish, and I save bug pesos!!

Sounds like 106/BFP accomplishes almost the same thing as FPII. As a final polish, which would you choose and why? It sounds like BFP cuts more than FPII but finishes out better? (in your opinion)

FPII or PO85U as it´s called by Menzerna have a little more cut then PO106FF and gives not the same finish as the 106.

The Blackfire compound is Menzerna PO85RD3.01 but with extra lubricant.

I mostly use PO91L with wool for compounding and PO85RD with finishing pad. Works everytime.

But I will get the Menzerna PO85RD3 in a couple of weeks, will test it on very hard clears. And I have heard that this should be the man for the job. The abrasives are more robust and therefor you can work them longer on harder clears, where the soft abrasives will break down faster.

IMO the 106ff finishes better then FPII on darker colors. I used FPII on my white acura legend the other day and was still impressed with the outcome. FPII can also be "fun" to use when its hot and humid out.

asharna: I would not be weary in the pre-2005 BS. If you've used something like IP or heavier before, there is nothing to worry about.

wifehatescar: FPII has a cut around a 2.5 or 3 IMO...106FF is a 4. Not only does it finish out just as clean or cleaner, but according to Menzerna, the gloss level is a full notch higher (out of 5, scale).

Not to be offensive but why do you think they are the same beside your desription. Does Men. work with BF? Aren't they both manufactured in Germany?

Yes they are made in Germany by Menzerna, but they added extra lubricant in the Blackfire line.

FPII/PO85U = cut 3 & gloss 4

PO016FF = cut 2,5 & gloss 5.

That's interesting as I thought the exact opposite was true--that the BF SRC FP (106FF) had more cut than FPII. It seems to me working with the product that it does indeed have more cut and finishes better.

Here's what CMA's website says:

"Menzerna tells us this polish has a 7% concentration of ultra-fine polishing agents compared to roughly 3% in Final Polish II. I was concerned that this increased concentration of abrasives might introduce swirls but they never appeared..."

Thinking...

I wonder if since the polishes are desingned for SRC's, that they cut harder initially on the conventional clears, but still finish out better. Perhaps that's why we think that the product cuts more--we are using them on conventional clears. In other words a cut of 2.5 on SRC's is equal to a cut of 4 on conventional clears. :nixweiss

Thoughts????

Sean,

would you also expect that the BLACKFIRE All Finish Paint Protection is the same as Menzerna FMJ?

I found it *very* similar to FMJ/UPP/WG...But many would argue they are three completely different products. I'm just giving my two cents having used these products pretty often in the past.

another question.....I have a lakeshore slate G35....in your opinion does a carnuaba or a synthetic sealant look better? I have tried both and seem to prefer the look of FMJ over P21S, although both give excellent results. Just looking for another opinion.

Thanks again.

I have a DG G35. IMO, they are very similar colors - semi-dark metallics. It's not a light silver or dark blue, but in the middle. I personally prefer the look of Z2 Pro on it, so yes, a sealant. I feel it produces a much better "pop" to the flake.
