All '94-'96 Impala SS came with the LT1 and the 4L60E automatic. There are some well scienced-out kits available to put a manual (usually from a Viper) in them but it's a bit of work and there have been a few long-term durability issues.
The automatic *is* the weak link in these cars though. Even stock ones often need a rebuild if you have much fun with them.
Yeah, GM and others have put the big blocks in them too, but that's a *lot* more work and it won't pass emissions/etc. inspection.
If it's not Black, Dark Gray-Green Metallic, or Dark Cherry Metallic it's either a) repainted from one of those colors, or b) a "cloned" Caprice.
