845 and what else for white paint?

Hey guys I will be doing a 2000 Land Rover Discovery, I had a question for the exterior. Car is parked outside 24/7 and sees all the elements, has not been polished/wax for a LONG time per owner. Before I do the whole clay/correct/seal, owner wants wash and wax for now. Need the most durable wax, which I think is 845?

I was going to purchase and use some 845, due to great things I have always read about it. I am out of town for a few months and do not have access to my garage or PC. Anything else I can add to "hide" swirls and clean the paint?

What can I use to restore the flares? I wanted Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus and then I read about GTechniq C4... Though it costs more than twice it appears to last a year or so?

Thanks!

Thanks!

IME Collinite's 476S is quite a bit more durable than 845, not that the diff is anything to lose sleep over. But I gotta say that Collinite doesn't always last that long for me on outside 24/7 vehicles. Sure not a bad choice though.

Autoglym SRP might do a little hiding and some paint cleaning. But you can't get it on trim the way you can with KAIO. Still a good choice though, a great base for most any LSP including 845.

Either of those (assuming you can get them nice enough to seal up with such products). I've used the Ultima and it's good stuff. I've never worked on one of those, so I'm not sure what the best approach would be, but I've done good work on *bad* exterior trim with HT Heavy Cut (AKA "357") and KAIO. If you use 845 you could maybe just use KAIO on the flares and then do them along with the paint when you apply the 845.

Somebody here was touting some exterior trim stuff last week that apparently works very very well, but I forget the name of the stuff

I've used blackfire with great success. Easy to apply and lasts a long time

How does BF leave white?

The way it darkened Audi silver sorta put me off (though I do use it for all sorts of things other than the paint on the car's body).

Though I recommended Collinite, my white car has ZAIO on it and when I get around to it I'll top that with FK1000P. That approach didn't seem right for what Rolla's trying to do though....

Thank you for the replies, looks like the Discovery has some bad swirling on the hood and some doors. I just moved and have to see if my PC and pads moved with me. I have NO products so need to buy all over :/.

If I have my PC what products should I get? I have traditionally used Poorboys SSR line for swirl removal, but am up for anything

And if no PC what products? I saw the hand swirl remover comparison thread and Meguiars Scratchx seemed to work well.

I wanted 845 bc it is safe on trim and lasts a long time, the Discovery has a decent amount of trim and I did not want to tape the trim. Or I would definitely get the 476.

I planned on buying ONR wash, SRP and 845. What should I get depending if I have the PC or not? I am trying to keep it cheap and need durable products to last.

Thanks again!

Collinite 845 is very durable, looks good and is inexpensive.

I might suggest a sealant instead if you're looking for durability.

To correct swirls I would recommend the DA MF 5" cutting discs and D300

Followed by M205 or Menz PO85

Follow that with Menz Power Lock, Ultimate Wax or Collinite 845

Maybe the new Meguiar's MF pad-based system. I've been using Optimum's Hyper Compound recently, but eh...I think the new Meguiar's stuff, or maybe that C1 that people are using these days, might be the way to go. But I'd give some thought to whether you need to keep such stuff off the trim or not.

Yikes, no way I'd want to do that by hand. If I *had* to do that I'd probably use some compound (M105, OHC, something...) followed by maybe 1Z Paint Polish.

Ok good news! The PC made the move! The bad news... It has no handle(which is ok), no wrench and has a 3.5inch backing plate on there. I am missing all my pads, products and MFs :(.

I am planning on getting the Megs MF pads... Can I use the 5 inch pad with my 3.5 plate? OR do I need to buy a bigger plate? What size is optimal and cheap? I think I had a 6 inch plate. Will the Meguiars DA Microfiber Correction Compound work best with these pads?

The paint is major swirled from auto car washes and exterior trim is faded. The interior dash is also fading/light yellowing.

Here was my plan of attack.

1) Woolite diltued mixture to clean seats and perhaps dash(or use APC on dash?)

2) Polish exterior with Megs MF correction compound, apply 845 on top(2 coats spread apart 2 days)

3) Use Megs Quick Interior Detailer for dash

4) Use Megs UQW for touchups and UQD for wipe downs

5) ONR for washing car.

Let me know.

Thanks again for all help and recommendations.

No loss on the handle, I never use 'em. Get a wrench and plate/pads when replacing the MFs.

Eh, I'd just get the proper size plates for the pads you'll be using. I'd buy the whole Meg's system, complete..do it right ;)

I don't like Meg's stuff on trim, but I guess there are lot of different types of trim so :nixweiss

Not sure what to tell you on the interior fading/yellowing

I'd want a second, milder step between the compounding and the LSP.

Great thank you sir! Are 5 inch pads fine? I was planning on buying this kit

Meguiars DA Microfiber Correction System 5 Inch Starter Kit, paint correction kit, dual action polishing kit , not sure if I care for the wax that comes with the kit, though I read good things about the correction compound.

I have only used PB SSRs as my swirl removers and KAIO as the AIO cleaner in the past and they served me well, along with some Megs stuff.

What should I get for in between LSP and compounding? Also what products would you buy, if it was you Accumulator? I was buying Collinite and Megs sprays because I have some AdvanceAuto coupons and gift cards. I am open to buy anything, just trying not to go crazy :D.

Let me know and I will place the order and get to cleaning!

Thanks again for all the time and help.

That should work fine. I've never used that stuff, but I've talked to people who have. I wouldn't bet my life that the finishing/LSP part of the kit doesn't do some concealing, but I'm also not sure I'd really worry about it (IMO we overdo such stuff here at Autopia).

I would keep it off the trim though, tape tape tape.

You might find some uses for that KAIO, like exterior trim (which I'd keep the Meguiar's stuff off of). KAIO the trim and then 845 it, quick and simple. IF the trim is too far gone for KAIO to be enough, then we'll have to see what to try next

Well, sane purchases that don't cost a lot probably aren't my area of expertise ;) But I think the Meg's MF system oughta work fine for you and I bet you can top the finishing polish/LSP with your 845 (might want to wait a day to do it though, or maybe after the next wash).

I wouldn't second-guess the MF system in the sense that "gee, there must be something better than that second step, I bet I need to make it better than that will leave it". Not saying you *couldn't* make it better, but I sure don't think you oughta worry about it.

I could say to go with Optimum's spray Hyper Compound, followed by some finishing polish (Menzerna, 1Z HG, who knows...)... eh, I could recommend a zillion different approaches that'd all work swell. But I think that the MF system would be a simple, user-friendly approach that'll get the job done just fine. Again, I wouldn't get all uber-Autopian about it, no IPAing, no such worrying at all. No need to drive yourself nuts or turn this into an overwhelming project IMO.

Thanks I am waiting to remove the swirls, I waxed the car and all trim. 845 worked great on trim! Wish I took before and afters of the trim. It brought faded trim back to life and beads water well! Thanks accum! Will post before and after swirl photos.

Just used the MF system on white that was heavily swirled with lots of deeper stuff that looked like someone drove in a wooded setting with foliage rubbing along the sides. For the most part one pass with D300 and the cutting pad took care of everything in one swell foop! The stubborn spots got D300 with PFW then the MF. Effectivive and simply astounding ease, especially the wipeoff. Right to LSP with white... have yet to use the Finishing Wax. It'll get 845 eventually but I ran out of time before having to take it out in the snow so gave it a quickie shot of Opti Seal. Nice look on white as well!

The MF System is becoming my no-brainer recommendation these days. The pads work well with every product I've used it on.

I have a alpine white BMW. I used Megs #80 and then NXT. It came out looking great. I would love to try some new stuff but the bottom line is that with this white car if you polish the paint in a half decent matter the LSP doesn't seam to make much difference. I think that I will try the Dura Gloss next

Since you won't get the depth and reflectivity on white you get with darker colors I find a 'bright' LSP gives a higher shine than most. NXT, 845 and other sealants and hybrids look better, IMO. If you want to see a high gloss on white hit it with DGAW after a wash. Yowza!
