7424XP v/s the UDM

Hi I just joined this forum after my husband dropped our ryobi obrital buffer earlier this week. It turned out to be a blessing as I have stumbled on what a Porter cable 7424 is capable of and now realize what serious car detailing involves and that the ryobi was merely a "toy". When I joined the Autopia Mayor welcome email stated " The Meguiar's G110 is a new and improved version of the popular Porter Cable 7424 dual-action car polisher" - this is $139 at Amazon. I am wondering if this is a better option than both - I am not familiar with the re-branding history of these items. I too am torn between the UDM and the PC 7424 but after I read some of the problems about the UDM, was discouraged because I don't think I could repair it if it broke. What I would like to know is who has the best warranty, etc and if the Meguiar's G110 is a good choice? Thanks to all for a great informative site.

if i were in the market for a new D/A, i would get the new PC7424XP (or you could get the Flex, but it would be alot more)...

Porter cable 7424xp, 7424xp, Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher, Porter Cable polisher, car polisher, buffer, sander-polisher

My 7424XP is waiting at the shop, and I'm really looking forward to laying down some GlossHaus with it. The 7424 has been the foundation of our system for a while, and I'm thinking the XP will be a welcome update.

As far as comparing it to the UDM, I think it boils down to the fact that the PC XP is similarly priced, equally powerful and more likely to be without defects at this point. I like the UDM, but I'm sticking with the PC, especially now.

Griot's just introduced a new RO, which looks and sounds a lot like the 7424 other than their basket handle (which I like). Their previous model had better specs than the old 7424, but in use didn't seem to have as much real torque - it seemed to bog down far more easily than my 7424 did.

As far as comparing it with the Flex - I love my Flex, but it is a more advanced and powerful machine that requires a little more attention than the PC. I use it for anything requiring more correction, but it isn't as dead simple and worry-free as the PC.

My $0.02

I got the new Griots RO a few weeks ago. The electrical specs say more power (7amps, 850 watts) -- which seems possibly good.

But the minimum RPM spec is higher as well, which doesn't seem as good to me (but I'm a noob at this).

"Seven Four Two Four" :D I hate it when people say long numbers like this.

Its a good video, I just found that woman irritating.

I had the old UDM untill it quit on me. Funny how I took it apart today to compare it to the PC and now it is running. Just cleaned out the dust and sprayed some electrical cleaner and now it runs. So I am guessing that I have a brush problem.

Where do I get new brushes for this thing?

Maybe you don't need new brushes, maybe you just need to clean out the dust periodically. Whether a different brush material would perform better is another story. Motor brushes are a bit like tires...some that or perform well wear down quickly and/or cause dust-related problems. Really hard brushes can wear the commutator, etc.

+1

good vid, but the those guys didn't even seem like they knew what the hell they were talking about! I also think she meant OPM, not RPM.

Ok .. I'll give my review ..

The New PC is more comfortable than the UDM or the old PC .. switches are nicer and the XP has more power than the UDM with less vibration.

BTW I have all 3 of them .. and have used the XP on 3 cars now. Another + is they kept the long cord.

BTW - used my 7424XP last weekend and it rocks. Seems slightly smoother and less likely to bog down. Has a less raucous sound, too..

The previous Griot's RO was 6 Amps, 750 Watts OPM 4K-7K

I had it, and despite the better specs, preferred the 7424. Would be interested in trying the new one out though...
