Now that the 7424 XP has been out a few days has anyone done a comparrison between it and the original UDM?

Just as powerful? Not as powerful ? Bout equal?

if i'm not mistaken, the new PC has more power. the G110 had a little more power than the UDM and the new PC has more power than the G110...

New PC- 6800 OPM

G110- 6700 OPM

UDM-6540

New PC- 4 Amps

G110- 4.2 Amps

UDM- 4.2 Amps

New PC- 5.75 pounds

G110- 5.5 pounds

UDM- 5.1 pounds

Now Im not sure if you really mean the original UDM, because if Im not mistaken, it was at one point a entirely different machine. Now, I have heard it is simply a relabeled old PC.

Your numbers are a little off. The PC 7424XP has 4.5 amps, not 4. And, it weighs 5.5 lbs., not 5.75. It also comes with a 3-yr. warranty as opposed to the G110's 1-yr. warranty. That means it's slightly more powerful than the G110, weighs the same as the G110, and has a much better warranty than the G110. And with it being made by Porter Cable, reliability should be excellent.

Mine will be here Monday :) .

I have one coming next week. I use the DA's for only a few tasks but with two UDM's just sitting in my garage broken I needed something.

Have we ever gotten an answer about whether there is anything we can do with the broken UDM's. I hate to jsut see them sitting there, especially since they have been used so little before they broke. They almost look brand new.

Hmm thank you for clearing that up. I got my info off the autogeek forums, before they were officially released. The numbers you posted make a little more sense.

Perfect Shine did have an extended warranty. From what I have read, the failure is easy to repair if you have parts (like brushes) so you may be able to get them repaired locally. The housing comes apart fairly easily so you will likely see what the problem is without much effort.

Definitely. Unfortunately though, my job on Monday is a silver Mustang. Not the best color for comparing machines as far as paint correction is concerned. But I'll get pics and maybe a short video or two up as well.

One of 3 things happen with the original UDM

a) On off switch can malfunction

b) Brushes go

c) Rotary speed dial goes.

All are repaired easily if you can get the parts. Try approaching the UDM people to see if you can buy parts. I got all 3 parts and have them up and running.

I'm not really interested in the comparison with the G110 or even Griots machine ..

More just between the original UDM ( before it became a rebranded PC ) and the new PC.

I have 3 original UDMs ( 2 are running , and parts to make the 3rd go , and I have an original PC ) ..

Looking at getting the new one if its worth it power wise.

Numbers are nice but don't always = performance.

New Griots machine item 10750 (just for the record)

7 amps, 850 watts

2,500-6,800 rpm

6" pad

6.1 lbs

Griots "we'll take it back" warranty

Anyone have any have any experience with these?

Didn't take long for this thread to go off track did it?

I just got my new PC today so I can come back later this week with a comparison. I had the old UDM untill it quit on me. Funny how I took it apart today to compare it to the PC and now it is running. Just cleaned out the dust and sprayed some electrical cleaner and now it runs. So I am guessing that I have a brush problem.

Where do I get new brushes for this thing?

Other than that, I am extremely excited about haveing the new PC. The UDM was great except that I went through four of them in a year and a half. I don't get why they couldn't jsut fix the problems.

I will get back with you later in the week witht the comparison betweent he two.

Hi I just joined this forum after my husband dropped our ryobi obrital buffer earlier this week. It turned out to be a blessing as I have stumbled on what a Porter cable 7424 is capable of and now realize what serious car detailing involves and that the ryobi was merely a "toy". When I joined the Autopia Mayor welcome email stated " The Meguiar's G110 is a new and improved version of the popular Porter Cable 7424 dual-action car polisher" - this is $139 at Amazon. I am wondering if this is a better option than both - I am not familiar with the re-branding history of these items. I too am torn between the UDM and the PC 7424 but after I read some of the problems about the UDM, was discouraged because I don't think I could repair it if it broke. What I would like to know is who has the best warranty, etc and if the Meguiar's G110 is a good choice? Thanks to all for a great informative site.
