7424 power died?

I've got a three or four year old 7424 that died today. I was using it with an extension cord, as usual, and while polishing a door on speed 5, it seemed to slow down, picked back up and then stopped entirely.

I took the back cover off and checked all of the connections visually (I don't have a voltmeter) and everything looks fine, but still no power. There weren't any loud noises or previous issues. Is it toast, or is there a possible fix like a fuse or replacement parts?

Maybe it's time to just suck it up and get a circular. One question about that (and I'll be searching soon, I just haven't considered it before) is a circular acceptable as a finishing polisher too? I finished the car by hand (ZPC works surprisingly well by hand) and I'm not looking forward to doing that again! Hand polishing sure is hard work, who knew? :nixweiss

Thanks all!

Ben,

From what i hear that goes out on pc or any power tool for that matter is the cord (again other thing can go out)you may need to replace that i havent performed that but some say it a snap other dont, you have to weigh your options i dont know how you used this tool as far as personal or detailed enviroment(that might not matter) but you need to decide if you want to take it in to get serviced or if you should get another one heck maybe a g100 lifetime warranty but that up to you......if i was in your shoes i would add more length to the cord but that me......sorry i coudnt help

were i got one of the idea to extend the cord

Your favorite polisher now has a 16 gauge, 25 ft. power cord! Reach far and wide with the Porter Cable 7424 HD Plus. With a 25 ft. cord, the best dual action polisher just got better. The 16 gauge cord is 2 ½ times the length of the ordinary Porter Cable 7424’s cord. This is not a drop cord – it’s wired into the polisher to deliver maximum power and performance.

If your extension cord wasn't heavy enough gauge it causes the 7424 to get hot and shorten it's life. Hope yours is an easy fix!

It's entirely possible that my extension cord has been undersized. I'll probably order a set of brushes and a power cord to see if that will fix it, but I suppose it could be more than that. Thanks all!

The PC's cord is prone to damage, I'd check that first. When I first got mine, I would regularly step on the cord the first week or two. After about 6 months, it stopped working and I had to repair the power cord.
