It is not meant to be for those who like to layer their cars with product. It is for those who would rather do other things on Saturdays than wash, wax and or layer their cars.
We use a sealant on our cars at the dealership; it is an aminofunctional silicone with some resins. I forget the specifics.
Its appearance is high shine, with little depth, which is actually very good for new cars in a showroom and delivery situation.
What we like best about it is that it lasts about 6 months out on the lot. Here in the northeast we get a lot of acid rain and snow, and what is most important is the protection, not the appearance. It looks OK, not Autopian, but decent enough (I mean, the cars are NEW, ferchrissake).
I see it as similar to Omaha Steaks. Great promotion, nice pitch. Decent product. If the pitch convinces you that the product is worth more than the folding green, you buy it. But, if you're the type of person who sits there and figures out the price per pound, then you're probably not going to buy 5 Star Shine, either. Nothin' wrong with Omaha Steaks; I just had a ribeye for dinner (I got them with GM perqs, not folding green). Nothin' wrong with 5 Star either. But, the value equation is different for everyone, and none of us can decide it for anyone other than ourselves. Of course that doesn't mean we can't share our value equations when helping fellow Autopians who come here asking; it just means that the final decision is up to each of us individually.
