I want to buy a UDM..can I use a 4" pad and the appropriate backing plate or do I need to use a 5" backing plate? I was told (I think incorrectly) that I can only use the 5"..I read the owner's manual online and it states that a 3.5" backing plate is O.K. I just want to confirm.

I do it all the time. I actually find the 4" setup a lot more comforting (userwise). Less vibration, works great....

Thanks Patrick..is there any difference between the backing plate for a rotary and a udm? I am using a rotary now and want to know if they are interchangeable.

UDM is a PC's, should we say, clone, and that includes thread pattern on UDM being same as on PC. Backing plates for UDM/PC are not interchangeable with rotary.

O.K...Thanks for the info!

The backing plates are not interchangeable between rotary and DA, unless you have an adapter that screws into the rotary bp and then leaves you with the right size screw to put onto the DA.
