3M SMR's fillers rule!

Interesting post, I enjoy the followups...

But I'm still a skeptic, so...

I think I'll do a comparison on a junk panel, and leave it outside during the winter.

Beanbag- Yeah, that *might* make a difference; I've seen some pretty dramatic differences between certain ss paints and the "usual" b/c.

JimmyBuffit- That would be a good test...which LSP would you use over the SMR- UPP perhaps (hint hint)? Heh heh, I'm skeptical too, not of Beanbag's results but rather of whether it would work out very well on most cars.

I too pitched my 3M SMR a long time ago, and like you I prefer to remove defects, but sometimes it's just not in the cards (e.g., the OE paint on my XJS is too thin for any more aggressive polishing and I'm sorta an originality nut with that car). Horses for courses and all that...

I apologize for being off topic with this, but is there any way to tell if your clearcoat is getting too thin without a really expensive gauge?

I have a brand new bottle of 3M SMR sitting on the shelf that I've never used. I always figure that by the time I make the effort to work an SMR in, I could just grab 1Z PP instead and just get rid of the defects permanently, JMO.

Yep, same here. :up

hey guys, how's it goin'?

I haven't washed my car since my last post, which I guess was back in october or something. The car sits outside all day. It was kind of filthy. I washed it for the first time last weekend, and I think the UPP and SMR are still holding out. The haze has not really come back, but the wax now has a fair bit of roughness due to water-spotting and has little bits of "stuff" embedded in it. (I could feel it while washing).

So maybe this is what people mean when they talk about "claying" on wax. Anyway, I ran out of clay and don't feel like buying any more, so I hope with a few more washings, the mechanical agitation will smooth out the wax a bit. Or else I could add on another layer if I felt like it.

  I think you're due for a full blown detail. Decontaminate wash, clay, get rid of the old wax, polish, protect. I would really try to remove the defects. Once that task is finally done...can take the course of a few days if you wish, then a meticulous washing process,or,at least frequent washing, ( remember, the more mitts the merrier ;) ) ought to drastically cut back on marring re occurring.

Maybe if you scrub extra hard you can really smooth it out, or just add layers to build it up to the contamination level and you'll never feel it.
