3M Polish Question?

I just purchased some 3m Perfect-It Foam Polishing Pad Glaze in the 1 Quart/32oz. size, (Part # 05996), from my local detailing products distributer. It says on the front label that it is for dark colored paints.

Is this the same polish as 3M Perfect-It Swirl Mark Remover for Dark Paints that comes in the 16oz. size? I went to the 3M web site but could not find out if they are the same. If anyone knows about this please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

I seriously doubt these are the same. Products formulated for polishing pads are usually aimed at pros with rotary polishers, not orbitals, and certainly aren't intended for hand use. The difference is that the abrasives mey not break down nearly as fast, and they may require the kind of heat a rotary generates to work well.

Does it say you can use it by hand?

They're both on this page, and I took a quick peek at their MSDS's and they don't have exactly the same range of content of some stuff, so I wouldn't say they're identical.

But just because it says "Foam polishing pad glaze" doesn't mean it's just for that. My 16oz dark SMR says that in its name too. The whole page I linked above actually sounds similar and they're all swirl removers... :nixweiss

4DSC,

Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for the reply. When I check the ingredients of both products I found that they are NOT the same. I will return the product I have and get a refund or credit for something else.

Cheers,

3M Swirl Mark Remover part number 39009 is the one you want, I have been told that Pep boys keeps it in stock. (Pep boys is not in my area)

Actually, the light and dark colored products are the same, the only difference is the dark colored version is tinted a dark gray color and the light version is tinted an off white color.

The Perfect It is a bit more abbrassive than the SMR. I've used both and the Perfect It will work when the SMR doesn't get the job done. But start with the SMR first. IMHO

I've used this product for a year now. Both for the light colored cars and the dark ones. The dark car version seems superior to me, although I really like both of them. It is not a serious swirl mark remover, but is really a glaze. It is not as agressive as SMR. It will remove some fine scratches, but not as many as SMR.

By experience, it really is what it says it is. It is designed to be used with foam polishing pads like CMA or Meguiars supply, not by hand, or a traditional buffer

3M always has excellent and consistent polishing products.
