Is there anything special to the 303 Wiper Wipes, or will just a good cleaning with a standard protectant do the job? i.e. 303 or Meguiars, etc..

Considering smell, consistency and application I'd say they're totally different products. Those I know that've used protectants on wiper blades have ended up with a smeary mess.
The 303 Wiper Wipes do what they're s'posed to well. I only use 'em occasionally a couple of times a year and my wiper blades have performed considerably better and lasted longer since I started using the stuff. There's enough juice in the pads to do blades on multiple vehicles and they don't store well after opening so I usually do the blades on all the vehicles at once.
