3.5" backing plate for 5" pads?

i ordered the custom 6 pack of LC 5" pads from danase with a 4" backing plate, but realized the bp i ordered says it is for a rotary, not a DA (i will have a pc7424).

if that bp for the rotary will not work, would the 3.5" LC BP work? The one I am talking about is the one sold by proper auto care. -> Flexible Backing Plates for DA Polishers.

I'd get the 5" BP. It works better overall, the pad will smush out some in use so you've got a buffer to the BP, and you can get a 3.5" as well if you've got nooks a crannies you want to jam it into. Actually, the easiest combo to get into odd little spaces is a 6.5" pad on the 5" BP because it gives you more room from the pc itself, which is usually more of an obstacle than the BP, if that makes sense.

Anyhow, you want the 5" BP as your goto BP for the 5" pads. AG also has 5.5" pads in orange and white, and FLAT, which might be important to you as you gain experience (or maybe not.)

thank you bob. i am curious though, what would be the reason i would want to use the flat pads? are you suggesting them for the size or is there some benefit to flat pads over the ccs pads?

In terms of my direct personal experience, I have a problematic car to deal with - black Honda (soft paint and black shows everything.) With a cutting pad (orange or yellow in LC) I get "dimple marring" with the CCS pads. It comes out fine with the next step, but with a flat pad I wouldn't expect to get any, and could conceivably finish (if I wanted to which I don't really) with an orange flat pad.

Philosophically, I don't see the point of the CCS pads at all. When they came out there was a lot of discussion about them. Never rose to the point of controversy I don't think, but it galls me a bit that there's little choice in flat pads anymore.

I have the white 5.5" flat from AG and have the orange on order. The 5.5" white is my main pad, I really like it - not too big and not too small. They're not only a little wider, but correspondingly thicker, and seem to take applied pressure better than the 5" ones. That's just my sense of "feel" though, others could easily see it differently.

i use the LC 5" backing plate and it works fine on both the 5.5" pads from AG, and the normal 6.5" flat pads...

I just checked myself on one of my remarks, and I was wrong. The CCS 5" and the flat 5.5" are the same thickness. Interesting I thought they were different - the increased volume from the larger diameter must give just enough cushion to make the difference I feel.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll just try out the ccs pads for now, and try the flat pads in the future.

And in the even that someone reads this thread in the future with the same dilemma as me, I ended up ordering the LC 5" bp (actually 4 7/8") to be used with the danase 5" LC pads (actually 5.25").

Hey Rajiv,

You might want to maybe pick up some 5.5" pads if you plan on giving them a try. AG is closing them out I think and I'm pretty sure they wont be making anymore. IIRC, all they have left is orange and white.
