How do I restore my black truck's clear coat? It has lost its shine and has what looks like someone took a bottle of something and just splattered all over it.

Hate to say it, but you're probably stuck. The clear coat is identical to the color coat, except it's clear (hence, clear coat).

Two stage paint isn't shiny once the clear is gone. It will look chalky and dull, and will be very susceptable (sp?) to UV damage...

Looks like a repaint might be the only longlasting alternative. Otherwise, just keep it waxed up as best as you can, and hope for the best.

Do you have any pictures, or can you feel the edge of the clearcoat where you think it has gone? Could it be some kind of dirt or stain on the top coat?

Have a look at the www.autoint.com site they have some pics of clear coat failure.

A couple wash and waxes for you guys Boo Hoo

The first is a Chevy 2500 HD belonging to my client's dad. The owner is away on vacation and I was called to take care of a few of their vehicles. I barely took any pictures, but it took me the better part of a day to complete this one.

To attack the interior, I first use a swiffer duster pad and run over the dash and panels to remove 99% of the dust, which keeps the cleaners from "mudding" up. I then used Meg's APC+ to clean the plastic interior, vacuum/compressed air and Folex on the carpets.

I have had great luck with foaming tire cleaners [eagle-one] on the rubber floormats. It leaves zero silicones/dressings behind so it simply deep cleans the rubber and leaves the with a natural look. I then go over them with OID which gives it a new look without any slickness that would be dangerous for rubber mats.

For the paint, I did a dawn wash, sealed the paint with DGPS3.0. The tires received Megs tire shine.

These are the befores

A unique issue was the wheels. There was sever etching and the clear was completed destroyed.

I removed the caps and used P21S polishing soap to remove what I could of the damage to improve the look until the finish gets addressed.

I then delivered the vehicle to the owners house, washed it with ONR, and wiped it down with HD instant detailer.

In a separate isolated stall was their brand new Chevy Suburban. They just received it and wanted a fresh coat of wax on it.

I gave it a quick ONR wash because it had been sitting for a while and there was a very small amount of dust built up. I found there was a crazy amount of tar on it too :banghead:

I took tarminator to the tar, which promptly removed it :cornut:

Gone!

I used OCW on the paint, and as you can see, there wasn't a lot of room to work with in this particular stall.

He had 9 bikes that I could see in this building and there was a lot of dirt/grease/oil on the floor, so before leaving I backed the truck out of the shop and degreased/washed/and dried the flooring.

I was able to do 3 vehicles for this individual and it has been a lot of fun

Thanks for reading!

Very nice Luke. That first one was a complete mess. You did a great job cleaning it up. I like the use of tire foam on the rubber floor mats. I will have to try that one.

Looks nice.

Although lately I have been using just soap and water on rubber mats since APC seems to dry out "certain" rubber mats.

Noticed same and made a bonus discovery the other day... I usually dry the mats right after cleaning to prevent spots. Didn't get to it until they had already dried and they looked like crap. I had just finished an ONR wash so gave 'em a wipe down and dried 'em off and they looked better than using any other method! The tires looked a bit dried out as well so gave them an ONR wipe and discovered I didn't need to dress them to look decent.

I now keep a spray bottle of ONR mixed at QD strength. My tires usually have MSLT on them, the rubber seals have been treated with GummiPfledge and most of the trim has UTTG+ on it. I usually wipe down that stuff before drying the vehicle and it helps things stay nice without constantly redressing. Sometimes the heat comes on and blows over the vehicle before I get things dry making trim and rubber look kinda crappy. A quick ONR wipeoff restores a very nice look without redressing!

I should state that I do start with the least aggressive method on the floor mats. I will wash them with a car soap, or simply an ONR wipe-down depending on the conditions. If they call for it, I will use tire foam and agitate with a soft brush and then rinse immediately and dry them. I also use ONR QD strength on many things like you mentioned
