2011 Cayenne, paint correction & Opti-Guard protection



The owner of this vehicle contacted me last winter about getting his new Porsche into the condition it should be. As you can see it had some significant wash induced marring and a few RIDS thanks to the dealers “hand washing”.



Process:

Washing - Foam bath with CGCW at paint prep ration and 2BM wash

Wheels - Sonax Full Effect Wheel cleaner on wheels with various brushes

Claying - Meguiar’s clay and ONR as lube

Paint Correction step 1 - Meguiars M105 via DA and Surbuf pads

Paint Correction step 2 - Meguiars M105 via DA and Meguiar’s MF pads

Paint Correction step 3 - Meguiars M205 via DA and LC tangerine foam pads

Prep for coating – Foam bath with CGCW and Optimum Power Clean followed by an IPA wipe-down

Paint protection – Optimum Opti-Guard, applied with foam applicator. (All paint, trim, and wheel coated)



The paint on this Porsche was actually VERY hard, which is not what I’ve typically experienced with Porsche paint and correction was slow going. I had to make several passes with the Surbuf pads/M105 to remove some of the deeper defects. The initial step finished down pretty well but did leave a slight haze and a LOT of dust. My second step with M105 and MF pads was to remove the marring and to chase down any remaining deep scratches…this left the paint pretty much LSP ready and the final finishing step with M205 went pretty quick.

I'm going to correct an of these tomorrow. I don't think I'll need to do 3 polishing steps on it though as I'm familiar with the car and its issues. I'm going to do some exploring with 300/301. Very nice finish though!

What year is the one your doing? I'd be interested in finding out if it has the hard clear as well....

I'll be prepping a 2011 but in silver. I don't think the client will want paint correction - that is for his JB M3!

And yes, the paint is insanely hard yet hazes easily. The jet black ones can be a real nightmare to correct.

OMG That was harder than GM paint!!!! I didn't have all afternoon nor did I have the energy to do 3 polishing passes. But the car I did was a Navy Blue metallic ca. 07/08 I think and it was REALLY tough to correct. I played with some different combos, but really there were so many RIDS in the car I did that I could not get much more than a 85% correction. I'm really upset to tell you the truth, b/c this was for a maintenence client and I see the car almost every 2 weeks. I've polished about 3 of his cars and this one was just brutal. He sympathized with me and mentioned "we bought it in rough condition, but I'm impressed with what you were able to do!"



I ended up using the MFDA twins on my Flex. I started thinking I could just one-step it with a green pad and 301, WOW was I wrong. I tried the surbuf pad followed by MF/300 and there just wasn't enough correction to the RIDS to validate working that hard. I didn't use any LSP as I'm curious to see how the 301's wax holds up over time.



The after pix show more correction than there was, seeing the car in person, you can see lots of hairlines every which way. I'm guessing the previous owner washed it with a brillo?!:soscared:

Looks like you experienced the same as me. The light swirls come out pretty easy with the D300/MF, but the deeper stuff just wouldn't budge.

I actually wish I could deal more often with harder paints because all the jet black Porsches, BMWs and Nissans I see regularly are starting drive me crazy!



I believe the two Porsches above had hard clear due to the metallic color... from what I've seen, most of the vehicles that usually have butter soft clear with black paint (Porsches, BMWs, Jap cars, etc.) will almost always have rock hard clear over a metallic paint. Just had this discussion with my partner and I really wish I knew the reasoning behind all the different clears within the same manufacturer. :noidea:
