2011 BMW 335 - suggestions on leather care?

Greetings! I just took delivery of a new BMW with black leather. I've used Lexol products for the last 20 yrs or so with pretty good results. That said, I'm hoping to keep this car for the long term. Anyone have suggestions on new products / solutions that would condition the leather, keep it in good condition / hydrated, and still have that nice leather scent?

Thanks in advance!!!

Edwin

To “keep it in good condition” may suggest appearance; to maintain at showroom aesthetic at all times; will require the routine cleaning and rinsing; to remove soiling before they build-up especially in-between the grains. Things we don’t see is the pH value shifting toward alkalinity of the leather from sweaty hands that deteriorate the finish and the structure; signs of extreme alkaline exposure is the tackiness; requires the pH neutralizing with a pH 3.0 acidifying rinse to rectify it.

“Condition the leather” suggest imparting a tactile-feel to the finish; draggy-feel is recommended especially to the steering wheel for better grip and buttery-feel to seats that lubricate the leather against wear from rubbing and getting in and out of cars; it’s non-stick protection reduce sticky soiling; including the common dye transfer from belts and new blue jeans; and even the common ballpoint will fail to disperse its nasty ink as the ball tip fails to roll on contact.

“Hydrate” suggests the rejuvenating of the leather structure with leather-safe (pH 3-5) hydrator; where the suppleness of the leather lies. Leather is hydrophilic (water loving) and can take up to 40% of water with strength and elongation; to dry averaging 15% of moisture level; hydrating moist is where the leather fibrils become relaxed to be stretched or massaged and or hot-plated of its unwanted creases.

However when the leather is dry again without fatliquor it will become stiff as the drying fibrils becomes stick together again and when flex will break the interlocking fibrils thus makes the leather weaker. Thus hydrating always follows with fatliquoring (fat, oil and water) to lubricate each interlocking fibrils so that when dry it will slide over one another smoothly that gives leather its softness, strength with suppleness.

“And still have the nice leather scent?” may suggest that the “scent of leather is more leathery than the leather itself”; the scent is infused into the fatliquor as part of the leather constituent and as the fatliquor evaporates as VOC (volatile organic compound) the leather scent diminishes as well.

Leather scent infused fatliquor has twice the durability to release the leather scent more than the leather scent infused tactile-feel protector.

What you are looking for is the new leather-safe (pH 3-5) innovative system for modern indoor leathers; rather than products used during the “horse and buggy” era still used today.

Good question - I am still trying to find the combination for my car. Right now I am using the BMW OEM leather conditioner (which has built in UV protection).

UV protection is overkill for “automobile pigmented” leathers (they are UV strong, fading is a defect IMO); relevant only for “aniline” leathers.

Conditioner should ideally match the leather type to impart the most relevant benefits of practical protection; besides to enhance the leather for sensuous enjoyment; not just to protect it out of blind fear.

Irrelevant conditioning that puts unnecessary layers onto the leather finish; may turn it more synthetic looking; liken to cheap vinyl.

Leather besides made to be sat on with expected suppleness; has to feast the eyes, impart a luxurious tactile-feel (buttery, draggy, silky or waxy) with our finger tips; and charm our olfactory organ with its classic leather scent.

All these characteristics of leather sought after; depends on our educated findings to condition them!

That will either turn our expensive leather more leathery or more plasticky!

Does the 335 have coated leather?

IMO, and I could be wrong, most leathers used in automobile seats are coated.

If they are not coated, then any water drops on the leather will be absorbed immediately, and that wet spot will darken temporarily.

Good stuff! That's the one that comes in a grey/silverish box with a sponge inside, i suppose????

It leaves a nice, matte finish...but it does not hv very good cleaning power when dealing with very dirty seats.

Yes that is the one. I bought this to replace the lexol I had been using. I still have some lexol cleaner so I use that once in a while to clean the seats. After cleaning, I use the BMW conditioner. BMW detailing supplies are pretty good and since I am a BMW car club member I get a 10% discount.

I have an 08 M3 with black leather. I've been very happy with Leather Master's cleaner and protect.

I am also a big fan of Leather Master's stuff. It keeps leather looking like like it came from the factory, it does not change the appearance or smell. Too many other products change the color, shine, and/or scent. If you want to do more research, this topic has been beaten like a dead horse, just do a search for thread titles with the word "leather" in them, there will be 2 or 3 that are about 10-15 pages long. Autogeek just started carrying LM, so you should be able to get a good deal as they always have some sort of coupon.
