2007 Mazda 3 Trim Material ?

Anyone know the composition of the two trim strips 3/8" wide or so that are inset into the length of the roof on each side of the roof maybe 2" in ? Methinks black aluminum or are they plastic. Lotta black accents (matte) on the door perimeters and this roof accent. I'm looking to protect it. I read the autopia downloadable detailing guide but I'm not sure what it's made of (couldn't tell from gentle tapping and I am trying to decide on the right product that won't dull/grey it up. Ideas?

Thanks,

Doug J

Pretty sure its just black plastic. I haven't had any problems with staining from P21S on the roof ones, but maybe try some 303 Aerospace Protectant? Not sure if it will absorb it because it seems like some sort of polycarbonate blend.

I use AIO/KSG with my Mazda 6 with the same trim material and it works great.

AIO/KSG works well with most any kind of trim - won't stain and provides good protection.

I have an '05 Mazda3. I always use 303 before applying protection. But then again, I don't have problems with staining from the protective products I use.

I have also used AIO/SG with great results on the trim.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't any clouding yet, I just wanted to be "appropriately preemptive". In the past with cars in my youth, I'd turn anything black cloudy white. Think it was me putting Rallye on everything? :-) I've heard of the 303 but I'll have to get some AIO/KSG.. I'm off to look up the coder ring..

Really appreciate all of your replies,

OK here's my confusion: I'm the chicken guy who got the new car, went to a pro detailer to "do it right for me the first time"... He washed, clayed & zymol'd the car and I don't know what if anything was done to what we now think is trim plastic... I will likely swich detailers for the next go round but I was hoping for something quickie to do verses ANOTHER wax on/wax off thing onlong runs of trim.

(I tend to do a lot of QD'ing between washes & was gonna add this to my periodic "rotation" In that vein 303 sounds like it... but it also sounds like the AIO/KSG is more lasting. The AIO/KSG thing sounds time intensive as the trim pieces run length of roof on both sides and are no wider than ur index finger... A spray of 303 or something LIQUID on a foam q-tip like thing, carefully wiped off with MF was what I was hoping I'd be told to do.

I can see me taking hours with wax residue everywhere when I just wanted to keep these trim strips nice n dark... Waaaaa... :-(

What am I mis-perceiving no flames please...

Do you mean you use 303 before using AIO? If so, wouldn't the AIO basically clean off the 303?

There is no wax residue from AIO and KSG if you use the products very, very sparingly - as you are supposed to do. A dime size amount of AIO/KSG on a MF applicator per each half of the roof of your Mazda would be enough to do your roof and the trim strips - no problem.

After you've applied AIO properly it just sort of blends into the paint - you can't even tell it's there. Similarly, after you've applied KSG with a "whisper thin" amount like you're supposed to do - you can barely tell there's any product on your car. However, it is putting an armor like acrylic protectant on your vehicle.

KSG and AIO don't leave behind chalky residue like some other wax products you may have used in the past.

Alternatively, if you just wanted to use KSG on your trim you could try putting diluted KSG in a spray bottle with 2 parts distilled water to 1 part KSG. Then you could just spray the trim and immediately wipe off with a MF towel. No fuss, no muss.

No, sometimes I'll just use 303. Other times (when doing full detail) I'll hit it with AIO then some SG maybe. Either way is very easy. One round to apply to trim. Then another round to wipe up any excess residue.
