2007 Black Z06 Corvette

Today I'm at GT Pro in Fullerton restoring a 2007 Z06 Corvette with only 200 miles on it. I wasn't clear if the poor finish was caused by a detailer the owner hired or it came from the dealer this way. Regardless, it was going to need some help.

Because this performance shop was still working on the car, the newly installed BBK's meant the original wheels wouldn't clear, so they had to leave it on the lift. This also meant that I couldn't flood the shop with water with a hose to wash it, so I pulled out my QEW and did the two bucket wash method using a lambswool wash mitt.

I taped off the whole car and covered the new brakes rotors and calipers. I also cleaned and dressed the wheel wells with Hyperdressing. It's not often I have this easy access to the wheel wells!

Because the shop lighting was less than ideal for polishing, I whipped out my new lighting setup that I built. This allowed me to see the true finish.

For the sides of the car, my dual 250 watt halogen lamps showed the defects.

And a huge jump forward--9 hours of polishing, the tape is removed, my foot show for scale reference.

This paint was scratch sensitive unlike the last Z06 I worked on. I ended up using a W9006 pad on the makita with 84 to knock out the swirls, then followed with M80 on the PC with W8006 pad. I used the W8006 pad and M80 on the rotary on a few spots to remove deeper defects. LSP was Prima's Epic synthetic.

I really enjoyed working on this Corvette. It presented a stiff challenge, the same type as the Infiniti G35's I've worked on. Using a new W8006 pad helped somewhat, as did removing the LSP with a MF bonnet. Anything to prevent instilling scratches is important for this type of finish. It does mean that the owner is in for a challenge in maintaining the finish though.

Next up is a Ferrari Modena 360 and another black Z06!

Excellent :woot2:

Still cant believe it, only 200 miles and it already beat up.:bawling:

What happened to that monster in just 200 miles......?

That kind of damage is unreal for a new car of that class......You did great job of bringing it back to pristine condition......:xyxthumbs

Those drilled slotted rotors with gorilla calipers look awesome......:D

Great job on an amazing car. Must have been such a pain to work around the lift arms though. I have done that many times in my shop and it is never fun. Congratulations on an excellent outcome.

I am so glad I was the first to touch both the black and yellow C6 Z06's that I do. Just amazing how quickly a finish can be fubar'ed in the wrong hands.

Excellent job as always bringing the paint back. :)

Excellent work there, shame to see the car badly hologrammed in the before pics, but the after make up for it! Lovely deep gloss, good defect correction. :up
