How should I approach detailing a new car. It's a '02 996 in silver. The car was picked up from the dealer with a glossy detail on it, likely to have been detailed with Porsche products. It's been three weeks now and has a light coat of dust on it.



Should I go with a wash with water and QD for now?



When would a clay bar come into play? It's likely this car will be a garage queen for many years, and not parked outside very often.



Any recommendations on leather protection?



I have a lot of the Meguires line, but after reading reviews, I'm prolly going to work with the Zaino line. Any comparisons? Does anyone know of a reseller with a bundle package? Whom has the best prices.

Do any of the Zainos act as a sealant like klasse AIO? Has anyone tried mixing the applications between the two brands?



What type of longevity does the Z2s have?

Welcome to the Board, can you find out from your dealer exactely what products they used and how they applied them to your car? The experience of most on this board is that the dealer prep detailing was not very good. Seems that fillers of one kind or another are used to cover up a poor quality job. Your dealer may have doon a really good job, see if you can find out. For now I would just was the car with a really good quality car wash you can get locally such as Meguiars Glod Class. Take a look at the links to detailing your car on this page.

First you need to inspect the paint close up.. I would suggest a dawn wash to remove any possible fillers to see if the paint is swirl free (Swirl remover)... Also look and feel for surface contaminates (claying)...



A lot of things here so I suggest you inspect first then decide what you want to accomplish.

The best advice is to sell your car and use the money you save on detailing and psychiatric treatments for cab fare! :D



But given that you probably won't take that advice, you seem to be heading in the right direction in seeking out the facts before jumping head first into a pretty complicated pursuit. Without getting into specifics, I will list some of the things you will need to educate yourself in. These are regularly discussed here but most if not all can be found in the archives or in the ebook:



1. Car Wash - all are not created equal

2. Chenille/Lambskin/MF wash mitts - ditto

3. 100% Cotton towel, Microfiber towels (that don't lint), synthetic chamois and other MF drying towels

4. QD products - lots to choose from but stay with the ones in a product line like Zaino or Blackfire if you use those lines.

5. Window cleaners and polishes

6. Tire cleaners and dressings

6 1/2. Clay bars, use and lubricants

7. Wheel cleaners and sealants

8. Wax vs Polymer/Acrylic and combinations thereof

9. Rubber cleaners/dressings

10. Leather cleaning and dressings

11. Lighting used to best view your work in

12. PC polisher and various pads

13. Polishes, order of abrasive to use

14. MF vs Foam applicators

15. Carpet cleaners

16. Techniques for use of all above

17. Best place to buy all above

18. Best dosage of Prozac to keep yourself out of trouble when you discover your first swirl or scratch....

One, even if they did use Porsche products, its probably the usual dealer quality detail, which is bad. Wash the car with some car wash, dont ever wash with just water. After you wash with the car wash, spray some alcohol on the surface (hood, door ect), this will remove any oils, wax fillers that may be hiding some nasty swirls. If you see some, wash with dawn, then a regular car wash to be sure the car is free of fillers and dawn residues. An alternative to this (and a better one IMO) is to purchase AutoInts ABC system. Its three car washes, each specially designed, to strip your car of stains, wax, sealants, acids ect. Easy to use and gets awesome results. Feel your paint with your hand, is it smooth and free of contaminants, or does it have some small bumps here and there? If it does, you need to remove them. Clay (and tyhe ABC system) remove theese contaminants. You use clay about once a year. Here's what you need.



Clean: Car wash and clay...or...ABC system



Polish: 3m polishes, Griots polishes, and some others are good too



Seal: Zaino, Blackfire or Klasse

As the previous posts stated, feel your paint surface after washing your car (might even try the baggie test) for any embedded surface contaminants. Even most new cars will need claying (rail dust, sitting outside on dealer lot, etc.)

Contact Zaino Bros. at www.zainobros.com for a list of distributors. Zaino's prices are all the same, except the distributors charge sales tax and Sal Zaino doesn't.

Yes, Zaino Show Car Polish (Z-5 & Z-2) are paint sealants like Klasse AIO, except Klasse AIO has cleaners in it, hence the name All-In-One.

I doubt anyone here has tried mixing applications. However, some have tried mixing up layers on their car. Eg. Blackfire topped with Zaino.

Zaino lasts a long time. I had three coats of Zaino on a daily driver and even after four months of heavy driving, the surface of the car was still very slick, smooth & glossy. I removed the Zaino after about 4 months so I never could tell how long it was going to last.

2006 Volkswagon Passat, 58k miles.

Client wanted a one step polish and some sealant.

Before:

Wheels, tires, and wells cleaned with APC, DC car wash, and various brushes.

The exterior was hand washed with Gold Class Shampoo.

Bugs were scrubbed off with a bug sponge and Body Solvent.

Rinsed, then dried with Water Magnets.

The car was clayed with Blue Mild Clay and LT at 1:1.

I did a one step polish with M205 and my G110.

I sealed the paint with M21 2.0.

Tires wells, and trim dressed with All Season Dressing.

Glass Cleaned with Glass Cleaner Concentrate at 10:1.

Thanks guys.

I actually hate Mazda carpet.

I did a Mazda 3 a while back and it took 30 minutes to vacumm light debris out of the trunk
