i was just wondering, whats the greatest or most prestigeous detailing event in the world? is there such a thing? only detailing event i know of is that concours event only because of the names of certain detailing products. actually from reading more about it its more of a classic car show than a detailing show. anyone ever competed in some serious detialing event?

NG Luder, there are several board members who have competed successfully in concours events. SteveMoriarty & BradB. come to mind. Brad's cars have won numerous numerous Jaguar Concours, the most recent I believe was the 2001 Jaguar Concours in St. Louis.

wow so concours seems to be the main big event for detailers... and i thought it was just an antique/old car show.:)

Luder, the word 'concours' just refers to an event showcasing automobiles and stuff. The detail quality in many of the upper-level concours events is secondary to stuff like authenticity, restoration quality, paint job, etc.

Having a perfect detail job is almost a given in events like the one at Pebble Beach. The real judging comes from how authentic everything is. As an example, any replacement part added to your vehicle that isn't the same substance and style as the original will pretty much eliminate you from the running. The use of modern fabrics or materials are spotted instantly.

Meguiars sponsors a concours in Palo Verde every year. I beleive this year it is in late summer but am not sure. Everything you see is fantastic. Pebble Beach concours is in August. Absoluelty beautiful stuff. A lot of the stuff never sees the light of day excpet for the shows. Have a guy I know that has a AC Cobra replica that has put 9 miles on the car in the 4 yrs he has had it. I put anywhere from 250 to 500 miles a week on KERMIT. I was actually voted down on points one time because one of the judges found out I ACTAULLY DRIVE THE CAR. He was astounded I would actually do that to my car. We all had a real laugh at this later.

Was at a concours last year where one of the judges was actaully measuring the space between KERMITS rivets in the aluminum in the my trunk & engine bay.. He wanted to make sure they were uniform. I really don't like doing shows like that. I really enjoy going to local "HOT DOG STAND" cruises and shows. Its fun to win a trophy but i have more fun by far just talking to my friends/fellow gearheads. Giving a person his first ride in a Cobra, opening it up on the freeway, seeing the smile an understaker wouldn't be able to remove, is more fun to me than any trophy I have ever won.

Hey ladies and gentlemen, I have a 03 pathfinder with etching/ swirl marks EVERYWHERE. I can't stand it. but anyway I just bought a buffer from Harbor Freight ( I know its cheap but I'm only gonna use it twice) but I don't have a lot of money and I'm trying to cheapest and easiest way to get rid of these. I have been kept up at night thinking about the best way to fix these but I don't know how to go about doing it. I am using m105 and m205 with pretty cheap pads. I want to ask what are the cheapest pads? and what tips do you guys have for an inexperienced detailer. I am starting a detailing business but mostly interior and washing / waxing exteriors. But my truck must be flawless for customers see the results of my business. Please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can learn from. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!

Which "buffer" did you buy? More details please.

Remember though, paint correction is not easy. Don't take shortcuts or try to do it fast. You'll pay in the end.

Hey CF. I just did my first paint correction last weekend. It's not something people can tell you how to do in a single answer. I read the PAC website (the sister site to this forum), countless threads here, watched Meguiars videos on youtube... the results were pleasing but not perfect. But scan through this forum (machine polishing) and/or search for "105" and you'll find tons of good info. I liked the youtube because you can see how fast the guy went, how long he stayed on a spot, how big of an area to do etc.

I'm not sure Harbor Freight really saves you money. A lot of that stuff breaks on the 2nd or third use. I got a great polishing kit here (PAC) for 219. Porter cable polisher, 105 and 205, pads, backing plate. I expect that to last me a long long time.

Good luck!

a couple quick ?'s

hey hey I appreciate your everyone's help. I kinda knew that I was gonna hear that. I guess you pay for what you get. I've been practicing with some bumpers that I found on the side of the highway. I know its a piece of crap rotary polisher but I don't have a lot of money. I have crazy spider webbing and acid etching. I'm looking for cheap products b/c I definately don't have a lot of $ to spend. Heres a link to the polisher I have http://www.harborfreight.com/7-inch-variable-speed-polisher-sander-92623.html I will definately try youtube. I didn't even think about that. but I'm not sure I want to buy a good d/a, or rotary but I think I just need to spend the money for a good polisher/buffer, and a couple of quality pads. I have a couple quick questions. What suggestions would you have for cheap QUALITY pads to get rid of cob webbing and acid rain etching on a black truck. Also what polisher would you recommend for this? Do backing plates really make a difference in the process? Even if there the same universal size? Also I live in Philadelphia and I have a friend who sells ARDEX products and I want to know if they are quality products and get some background info on there company, obviously he's a little biased because he gets paid from commission. Thank again
