Just a little update on this car. But first, I'll introduce myself: I'm JT, and I'm the owner of it, and of the Alpina B7 Turbo Coupe in the background. Thanks for all the positive comments - I really appreciate them.
I just got back from the 2007
Southeast SharkFest, and I'm proud to report that my 635 took first place in its class ('85-89 model years) - thanks Tyler! The judges said it wasn't hugely outstanding in any one area, but it was consistently excellent in all areas. And a note - this wasn't a concours competition, just a show & shine, so the underbody wasn't taken into consideration (thank God).
After Tyler did the polish job, I did some detailing to the car. I cleaned the engine compartment and waxed the paint there, and did the same to the door jambs and doors. I gave it a really good vacuum (as my daily driver, I used it to haul 32 bags of mulch a couple of days after the polish, so there was some mess to clean up). I also shampooed the carpets and mats and went over the leather with some Leatherique Prestine Clean.
The night before the competition I washed it and went over the exterior with Aquawax (thanks again, Tyler, this stuff is great), then covered it for the evening. We were up early on Saturday, and lined up for a panoramic photo in front of the Biltmore at 7 a.m. When we got to the show area, I spent about an hour going over the car, cleaning windows, wheels, and the interior (after being on the road a week it could have used a vacuum, too, but no one had one).
I was there when the judges showed up. The first thing one judge did was run a finger under a trunk hinge, pulled it out out almost black and pronounced "busted!" I had to walk away. I wasn't going to stick around and get crucified. I was absolutely in shock when they announced my car as the winner at the banquet that night!
Anyhow, here's a few pics. I wish I had a link to the panoramic photo, but the photographer doesn't have it up on his site. These will have to suffice. Enjoy! ---JT
