Wow, worst paint ever! This is 40 year old paint that looks like it's never been touched! After each section with the cutting pad and the polishing pad they were so caked I had to wash them off after each section. Took so long doing this, and I didn't have a lot of time to deal with so it didn't come out quite the way I wanted it to, but it does look a lot better than when I started.

Very Nice!! What I like to do with oxidation is go at it with a paint cleaner first. I usually do meguiars deep crystal paint cleaner via terry applicator. Of course this has its limits but if I can do it by hand I will becuase I dont wreck to many pads and it makes the buffing afterwards much easier. Great transformation

SpoiledMan: What kind of brush should I be looking for? Where would I find it? I haven't looked for anything like that yet, but do you have any suggestions? I would really like to have one if anything like this comes up again.



GregCavi: I was thinking that would be a good idea when I was doing it but didn't have any with me at the time. I'll give that a try next time. I actually started to tear up the polishing pad a bit, this paint just seemed to grab the pads, wasn't slick at all.



Scottwax: I used my pc with sfx1 followed by sfx2 and topped with nxt paste. I would have done at least one more pass with the sfx1 but didn't have time, and didn't have time for sfx3 either. Too bad, it would have looked much better if I had time for that. But I guess it'll do, when I first got the car you could barely see yourself in the paint. Looked more like house paint!!
 
If I had a rotary I'm sure I would have used it, but I'm fairly new to all of this - just started this summer. I'm thinking about buying a rotary next year when I'm a little more experienced (I know there's already been a couple of times where I've decided the pc was too weak and I needed a rotary).

Just curious, where did you buy your PC, PC pads, and polishes from?



I got some family to bring a PC over from Lowe's in the US when they came to visit a few weeks ago. I still need to order the pads and polishes though. Really don't know the best place to go for that (probably online).
 
I have to agree with Greg, starting with a terry cloth towel to break up the initial layer of oxidation is a real pad saver.
 
That wasn't paint, it was plastic in between the tail lights. It actually looks much more clear in person. I bought my pc at canadian tire (they actually had a couple in stock!) and my first set of pads/polish/towels etc. from autopia car care. I've since gotten some pads/towels etc. from eshine.ca (I've found their cost a bit lower).
 
Next time try something like ABC, it will strip through all the oxidized paint and greatly reduce your buffing effort/time, making the work easier for you. BTW it came out great :)

If you don't mind me asking.. how much did you pay for the PC @ CT? I went to some stores around my area (CT, Home Depot, House of Tools) and they all said they would need to custom order the thing.. and that it would cost ~$200+.

After the US conversion, mine worked out to be around $115 CDN.



I looked at e-shine and they only have the 6.5" pads. I guess I will have to look elsewhere for the 4" pads I want.

My aunt bought it for $99 + gst. She told me to just pay her $100 USD for it.



Yeah, Canadian prices are outrageous. I've been wanting a PC for years now.. everytime I go the USA I stop by a local Lowe's but they always seemed to be out of stock. This year I remembered to ask my Aunt to bring one across the border.



Some things are just so much cheaper in the USA, even when currency is factored in. I was pricing out a juicer not too long ago and even when I converted the different currencies, it was around $150 cheaper getting it from the USA.
 
I bent over and took it from canadian tire at 2 hundred and something dollars (don't remember the exact amount). I didn't really look around and paid for it. You got a great deal on yours!!
