1961 Caddy - Brought Back To Life

This is a recent detail of mine. It is a friends car with Lacquer OEM paint that is extremely faded and dried. I used a number of different products including Meg`s #7 Glaze to help bring back some of the paints luster. Unfortunately it wasn`t enough and needed to be compounded using my Rupes 15 Mark II, Meg`s MF Discs, and FG400. I also decided to try out my Natty`s Black for the first time to see how it would do on a white car. It turned out really well and definitely gave the paint a deeper look. The paint didn`t come out perfect in the end, but it is 110% better than before. The owner was extremely happy and I thoroughly enjoyed detailing such an awesome car.

Scott !
Wow - you did a great job !!!
I cant even comprehend how 1961 acrylic lacquer would still be in such great condition !!
It looks fantastic !!!
I remember putting gas in those big dogs when I was in Jr.High School (Middle School)..
That back seat could hold a whole lot of people in great comfort.. Holy Barcalounger ! :)
Thanks for all that hard work and your expert diagnosis for bringing the early 60`s back to life !

Thank you so much Dan! It means a lot to hear that, especially from you!

I didn`t think the paint was going to be able to shine like it did either. Especially after some very unsuccessful test spots. But as soon as I wiped away the compound residue I was blown away!

Yes, it is definitely a HUGE backseat! Easily could fit about 4 people. Probably could fit a smart car in the cabin! Lol

Thank you again my friend!

Nice work, Boostin!
Restoring vintage lacquer certainly requires considerably more effort, attention and care than polishing swirls out of a modern finish, but you had to be extremely satisfied at the outcome and your friend had to be absolutely blown away. I had been using #7 since the mid 70`s, but never realized its true potential until I discovered Mike Phillips` article back in 2010. All the yardage on that big boat had to wear you out!

Thank you Bill! It certainly did at first, but once I got my technique and product dialed in it went pretty smooth. I think the grill wore me out more than anything. I hand polished the entire grill and even had a few cuts to show from it. Those little slits were like razor blades.

That Mike Phillips article is one I came across through my research. I ended up giving my bottle of #7 to the customer to help keep this paint up to par. I figured he needed more than me. I also educated him on how to use it. He was very appreciative.

And yes I was blown away and so was he and especially his wife. Having her come up and tell me how well it looked really meant a lot.

Good gawd that`s a sweet caddy! Nice job sir! That`s one big car
Thank you Justin! She sure is! Surprisingly not nearly as hard to drive as most (even myself) would think.

Thank you, nice write up. Nice finished product.
Thank you GH!

Last shot is the money shot

Beautiful
Thanks Ron! I agree, that is the best photo of the Caddy.

Nice work... I am sure you went through the pads on that beast!
Thank you! Yes I did lol. I had to have a bucket with pad rejuvenator ready to toss the pads in.

Never would have thought of Natty`s Black on white... may just have to try it on my 67 :) thanks for the posts
Well, it wasn`t the plan initially. I had planned to use Meg`s Hi-Tech Yellow Wax. I have been itching to try it out my Natty`s Black since I received it. It said all colors on the pot so I figured what heck, let`s give it a go and see how it does. The rest is history.

OUTSTANDING result! It`s amazing what a little bit of time and effort can do...the owner must be following you around like nursing puppy.
