A couple weeks ago a guy called me up to get a quote on polishing his boat because, in his words, "it is a little dull looking". The boat was in a warehouse a few blocks from me so I told him I would stop by to take a look. Upon inspection I decided that a complete wet sand of the top side would be required and we set a date to get the work done. (Getting this job was kind of a big deal for me because the warehouse his boat was in literally shared a wall with the self-proclaimed high end detail shop in town. He had his boat done there before and was not happy with the results.)
Anyway, after a good wash and acid cleaning to remove the staining on the bottom I was ready to sand. My process was 1000 grit by hand, 1500 on DA, 2000 grit by hand which took about 8 hours. After sanding I hit it with 3M marine compound on wool with Makita then the same compound on an orange pad. I figure that 205 is pretty oily so I applied that via DA and orange pad. Final step was Collinite liquid fleetwax (870). Interior was also cleaned with steam and Starbrite vinyl cleaner. 303 for protection on vinyl surfaes.
Before. Notice how chalky and dull it looks.
You can see the difference in color on the areas where the bimini cover protects.
