15 Yr Old Swirls...

3M SMR - Yellow Pad and Lots of elbo grease still doesnt not seem strong enough. Yes I worked the SMR in like a champion.. but still the results arent what I expected.

What other product cant I use with the Porter Cable?

Someone suggested compounding the entire car?

i see meguiars has

Heavy-Cut Cleaner

"provides protective lubrication, you'll restore a smooth surface-also suitable for painting-without scouring your finish."

That sounds scary.. heh.

If you want to stick with 3M, go with Finesse-It II next. Otherwise, I would go with Meguiars DACP.

I have to agree. Now that you have tried the least abrasive SMR go the next step to Finesse-it II or DACP and see what happens. Then take the next abrasive step if that doesn't work.

Most people here will suggest the method of ALWAYS try the least abrasive first!

It's the safest!

Try and use DACP first with the yellow cutting pad. It's designed for medium swirls. It may also take more than one application.

If they are serious swirls, probably the best thing to do is find a professional detailer who can use a rotary to heat up the paint and remove the swirls completely.

so a rotary is the only thing for HEAVY swirls?
I think he recommends a pro with a rotary because it'd be the most efficient way of doing it. You could try some medium compound (medium cut or DACP? dunno) with a wool pad on the PC. It might take longer or several passes though.

Even wool on a PC is sounding pretty mild these days and more people are using it. You can always try it.

How bad are your swirls? Are they heavy, heavy, almost on the verge of having scratches everywhere (please repaint my car!), bad? If not, I'd give it a shot with DACP and a cutting pad or wool pad and see what happens. You need a product in between your SMR (Cooper MINI) and your Heavy Cut Cleaner (M1 Abrams tank).

I’ve had a couple of vehicles which I was able to remove some of the scratches and swirls using DACP but I was able to get better results by moving up to Meguiar’s Compound Power Cleaner using a yellow pad on a PC. You may have to follow up after the CPC with DACP or some other finishing polish before going to wax.

A rotary heats up the paint so the swirls are literally filled in. Must be used by an expert or the finish can be harmed.
