$100 for full outside detail?

I like blue! :oP
Well i picked up a 98 f150 a few weeks ago and well have not had anytime to do the detailing myself. I have no place to work right now. I stopped by a place a few miles from me to see how much it would cost to just do a full all out exterior detail. The guy i bought it from said it was done prior to putting it up for sale. But whoever did it, sux. Swirls like crazy, and well it just looks nasty. I explained to him what it looks like and he said around $85 but maybe closer to $100.

Is that a fair price just for an exterior?

Sounds fair for swirl removal. That wouldn't include anything else though. Bump the price up to about $120 - $150 if you want swirl removal and a wax. However, if the guy is willing to do the job well for $100, then I say take it. That is a good deal.

Did the detailer tell you what the process was going to be?

There is couple of DC members who are professionals in North New Jersey who maybe able to detail the truck.

that's $100.00 u.s. to us canadians that's like $500.00

Well, I could do it at $500! :holiday:

I charge $30 for the first hour and $25/hr after. I couldn't wash, clay, and do a 3 point polish system for $100 (under 4 hours) if there are marring marks and lots of lines.

ok the detail includes wash by hand, compound, i believe he said use the wool pad if the swirls dont come out with compound only. then wax by hand. it also includes doing the rims and tires, glass, he even said it included vacumming out the interior and doing the door jams. Im going by on thursday to show him the truck and get more details.

If he does a good job, i'll have him do my jetta aswell. Theres some swirls on there too.

how can i get in touch with some guys in North jersey?

I charge $40 per hour for polishing and clay is 20 bucks. 2 hours of polishing and a clay job would be $100. Obviously I'd have to see the vehicle before I quoted anything, but $100 sounds like a fair price if you ask me. Likely the shop will be using a rotary and won't take as long as I would have to take with a PC. It may very well be that doing that job with a PC would cost more than $100, but if the guy you showed it to is a professional and knows how to use a rotary without burning the paint then you should be fine.

There's a guy down here (MS) that charges $85us and up for a full interior/exterior detail, with no compounding. Then again this is a much poorer region than north Jersey.

well i dropped the truck off tonight so he would have it first thing in the morning. I spoke to the owner and showed him the truck. He couldn't believe someone would leave the paint the way it was. But he is going to take care if of it for me. No more then $100 he said. I asked for it to be clayed and i believe wool pad to get the swirls down to a minimum.

picked up the truck after lunch time and i must say im very pleased with the end results. Truck actually shines. Couldn't believe my eyes. All the stains that were on the paint are gone, most of the swirls/swirling are gone. There are some area's i will try and touch up myself. I picked up on these spots when i moved my moms van behind my truck.

But all that shine and beauty is now lost as its been raining for the last 10 hours and wont let up till after turkey day.

:censored:  Well today i got to see how dirty the truck was after all the rain the past 2 days. I must say im very upset now at the finish of the truck. Its like all the wax washed off the truck, swirls are back, lots of buffing machine marks on the truck, anywhere that water sat then ran down the paint is stained or just some dirty ass water marks. Im am so pissed off.

But now it leaves me with a base to start off myself. I will get it better then this place.

The person that detailed your truck was probably using products with fillers instead of correcting the paint.
But I'm sure that a certain amount of improvement was done, where now by doing some reading and with suggestions from other members, you will have your truck looking great in no time.
Do you know if he clayed it? I read that you asked.

Happy Thanksgiving

J said he could do swirl removal for $100, but I'm not sure that I could. Take it back, show the results, be kind, see what they offer. If they do you good, be their biggest fan. If they don't, DIY.

I agree with PEI, go back and be polite but firm and see what happens. Most likely he'll do something to correct the problem.

If not after a few searches and post 's here you'll be a pro in no time..

Not sure what they did or used on your truck but what ever they did use it should of never done what you describe

What I can offer you is
"WE" you and I can take care of this in the spring time....right now I'm in my slow season due to the Holidays and cold weather (it's just to damn cold for me to play out side)
"WE" together can use my tool and supples to rid your veh of swirls/ imperfections. I will not do this for Free, and most time I charge the same you paid the other guy, The difference would be I will teach you the right way to remove the imperfections, What a PC can and can NOT do, What the rotary can do and the limitations/dangers of that powerful machine, also I have a Cyclo polisher in my arsenal and you can play with that to get the feel of an oldie but goody machine.

Your call Homie.

So what I can offer you is a full day of learning "how to" with "Hands on training" also benefit of getting your truck very close to a competition show shine.
