1 or 2 "Must Haves" for General Interior Carpet Cleaning?

Thanks Phil. I appreciate the tip/warning.

Macgirl, that's a nice trick. I will try it out when I get my truck back from the bodyshop. I had chocolate milk get in the carpet.

JaredPointer,

For milk you can mix 2 tablespoons of white ammonia + 4 cups warm water, spray area and work from the outside in, blot and rinse. Repeat if needed. Spot test first though.

You can also use 1/4 teaspoon Ivory Dish soap + 1 cup warm warm water as a spot cleaner.

Oh heck, here is my secret resource for carpet cleaning.....http://www.stainmaster.com/stainmaster/carpet-care/stain_removal_guide_index.jsp. We may not have Stainmaster carpet in our cars but these are basic cleaning solutions that work. I've got a husband, a two-year-old who is dangerous with a sipee cup, and used to have a boxer (dog) in the house.....needless to say I got good at spot cleaning carpet, you'd never know we used to have a dog in the house! RIP Kobi girl.

MacGirl,

Excellent link, and I forgot about the vinegar tip. I've never thought to use it (vinegar) as a cleaner, but it is excellent while rinsing the carpet. Just like when you use it in your rinse water for MF towels and other laundry, it allegedly helps to release the soaps and provide a cleaner rinse. It really does seem to work in the laundry, of course I don't have any quantifiable evidence to prove that.

I've found 303 Aerospace Cleaner is excellant and leaves no smell. I've also used OxiClean (as seen on TV). It really works. Again, no smell. And this stuff is super cheap by comparison.

Oh, I forgot. In my area I've found the 303 products at the boat or pool places. Such as West Marine and Aqua Quip.

Larry A, I have seen it mentioned before where someone was using ammonia for cleaning automotive carpets. The use of ammonia or vinegar both ingrigue me as they would be pretty cost effective. Do you use the sudsy variety? How long before the smell dissipates? Does it leave any noticeable residue requiring additional rinsing?
