#0000 Steel Wool

I've been meaning to pick up some #0000 steel wool, but I wanted to see where you guys get yours. Any place online you'd recommend?

What about locally? Would a Harley Davidson shop have it?

Any and all input would be appreciated!!

Thanks.

You're good to go on brushed or chrome tips, it generally won't scratch either. On polished aluminum like zaxjax mentioned go with the grain. I usually follow with a metal polish and a softer medium just to clean up any hazing the #0000 leaves behind, just like compounding paint.

Oh, and wait till you try it on hammered tips, works great. :)

Thanks, Kevin. I really appreciate your input on this.

Also, thanks to everyone who responded. I guess I'll be making a trip to Wal-Mart and/or Home Depot.

Hulk, I think you'll find #0000 wool at just about any hardware store. It's not hard to find. Look in the paint section.

If you have any natural finish wood furniture in your house, it's wonderful for hand-rubbing in oil ;) Great for cleaning stubborn sticker residue on glass, too.

Like Tom said, any hardware store should have it.

Go with the grain of the tips front to back not around!

Hmmm, since when does stainless steel have a grain? Do you go with the "grain" when you polish your paint too? I use a rotary on everything, so I guess I'm screwing it up!

Joel,

The DeLorean John (Eliot Ness) and I detailed a couple months ago most certainly had a grain to it. I was told by David B and I believe Jimmy Buffit to go with that grain when washing/polishing. If John takes a look at this thread, maybe he'll post one of the up close photos of the DeLorean.

Here is a close-up shot that shows the grain in the stainless steel body of the DeLorean:

I remember John DeLorean on the Tonight show talking about all you needed was a steel wool pad to buff his new car.

The obvious exception is on polished stainless where all the grain has been polished out and it has a mirror or chrome like appearance. For that or even chrome I would try something non-abrasive to clean it before I tried even 0000 steel wool. 0000 SW is great stuff to have around and I'd never be without it, but it can leave marring on chrome, ss, or glass if you're not careful.

Just another opinion. I've been using the 3M Scotch Bright Scrubbing pads, Scouring pads and Erasing pads for most things I used to use 0000 for and I find they are less prone to scratch and don't leave behind tiny metal fragments. They come in 4-5 different aggressiveness versions. They also have a couple designed just for stainless steel and glass. The glass stovetop cleaner is outstanding for removing road film from windshields, FWIW.

Sponges and scouring pads from Scotch-Brite

hmm im new to this...what is the exact procedure ?

#0000 steel wool rubbed onto the exhaust tip and muffler canister ?

do you apply water/lube/metal polish ?

the only thing I have for metal is the nxt metal polysh.

have not used it yet but i think its mf and buff
