im interested in investing say around $50 for a nice light with a stand of some kind that can stand on its own. that way i can detail in the garge with sufficient light and also look for hidden swirls u cant see in normal daylight. even do engine work with that light at night too.

does anyone know or have experience with anything like this? any particular brands? im assuming that florecent lighting is probably the best all around kind of light to see swrils right? and just to be sure... florecent lights are like those long white tubes right?:D thanks for any input on this, my main use for this item is for looking for scratches and swirls...

Ng Luder,

Don't get a fluorescent light, it will drive you nuts when you see all the scratches on your beautiful ride, trust me, it will make you crazy:bounce Just drive over to my parking garage and pull under the fluorescent lights, you will see what I mean:eek:

I don't know.... I have flourescent ceiling fixture in the garage and I can't see any swirls. I also have a 10" square handheld flourescent worklight which I have gone around the car with and it too does not show any swirls. The only time I see them are out in direct sunlight or sometimes in the incandesent light from the garage door opener. I'm thinking maybe a very high intensity light like a halogen might be the best.

HERE is a link for halogen work lights. With a double stand you can use just one of the lights which is probably enough for use in the garage. The typical halogen work light is 500 watts and very bright.

That website won't let me link directly to the halogen worklight page. However if you do a search for worklight it will lead you there. Happy hunting. :)

Another of my "Regulars". A very nice fixed roof coupe! In Torch Red... (of course!):cornut:

The car had some fairly typical swirls. The front bumper and hood have been "sand blasted" from about 90,000 miles of hiway driving! So I did the best I could with them... Again... this Vette clearcoat was Diamond Hard!!! (why do I like doing these so much???:banghead:)

The sky had some high hazy clouds, so the sun shots aren't the best.

PROCESS:

ONR Wash
Zaino Red Clay
M105/KBM/LC Orange via Griots RO at speed 5 HEAVY pressure with slow passes
M205/KBM/LC White via Griots RO at speed 4 Moderate pressure with slow passes
BFWD via GriotsRO x2 back to back
Z8 to finish

Nice!

The car needs just a little something though. Those sun shots with the clouds make me think how nice that car would look with some mutant white flames resembling clearcoat failure on the roof. <NOT!>:rofl:

lol...for a second I thought it was that same car again!!

Cheesy flames or not, I shouldn't bag on the guy. At least he has a 'Vette. I don't. :(

If that's "the best you could" I can't imagine what even better looks like. Looks perfect to me. Nicely done Bill.

Thanks Puckman.... (shoulders are a little stiff this morning):o

nice work bill. you did this car last year and it looks like that already, you should give a quick tutorial on how to keep it the way you gave it to em... looks like you're back in the swing of things

Nice job Bill!!

Well that is my Corvette. Bill did a fabulous job as usual. I am in a local club with him and he has given me a bunch of tips in the last few years. I am a regular in the sense that I see him at at least 5 cruises a year and ask advice reguarly!! I bought the car almost 3 years ago with 75,000 miles in fairly bad shape as far as the paint and interior went. I did all I could by hand with every Zaino product made, but some damage by a body shop that I had paint the underside of my hood and deck lid made me come to Bill this year. He had never done my car before, but I could not get the damage out of the deck lid by hand. So the condition you see here was me trying to fix all the damage it had when I got it, then maintain with just a once a year 3 or 4 coat Zaino treatment. I am going to try to polish it more like 1 coat per month now and see if it helps. I only wash the car once or twice a year, and just dust/shine with Z-6 and a super soft microfiber. I will probably alternate Z-5, Z-2, and Blackfire WD. I plan to let Bill do each of my other 2 cars once over the next couple years, then maybe buy a random orbital and some pads, and get to it myself.

Holy Cow, Bill, nice job!!!!!

I should clarify... I haven't done that car before. But Jeremy is a regular customer because he has several vehicles that I will be polishing.

Hey Jeremy! I'm glad you are happy with the paint correction. As you witnessed, it took some real power and pressure to get those hood swirls (90%) removed!

I think the top, trunk, sides and back turned out fantastic. I just didn't want to compromise the clear coat on the front bumper and hood, since it had taken such a beating from the previous owner!!! All things considered, it turned out pretty well.........

After seeing my technique yesterday, I'm glad you've now got the bug to try a little "power" detailing yourself!

Always a pleasure working with you!!!:D
