Building a new garage!

Posted this over at Autogeek a couple of weeks ago but never got around to posting it here. So here goes!

So a couple of months ago I moved with my dad to a different house (parents are separated, and I am not financially secure, blah blah blah). Anyway, the house we moved to was built in 1967, and only has a single car attached garage. So, my dad decided he wanted to build a garage.

It will be 24' by 24', with 2 windows (1 on the right, 1 on the left with a side entry door), overhead storage, adequate lighting, a water spigot (current spigot is basically on the other end of the house), 16' premium garage door, 8' ceiling, fully insulated, vinyl siding, shingled roof, and a heating/cooling unit that can be turned on and off as needed. The old blacktop driveway is also going to be torn up and replaced with concrete. The concrete in the garage and the driveway will be done at the same time.

I will keep this thread updated with pictures as I take them. The company he has a contract with should have it completed before the end of January. It can't be done soon enough, because I am stuck parking outside for now!

Expect more pictures as the work progresses. Thanks for looking! :surfing

You'll really enjoy this. 24 ft. X 24 ft. will make a great single car garage. ;) I'm kidding of course but by the time you put a few cabinets, tool boxes, sinks, wall storage etc. (you get the picture), it's amazing how fast 24 feet disappears. I've got a 3 car attached to the house set up, one is 18 ft. X 32 ft. and the second leg of the L is 28 ft. X 28 ft. When I built this I thought it would be huge, all I can say is I should have went bigger.

Congrats on the new build. As Mark stated you will be surprised how things fill up fast in the garage. I have a 3 car attached to my home. Nothing is stored in the garage unless it is garage related. After you started adding jacks, and other car related stuff it fills up.

I wish I had a another detached now lol

So awesome! Congrats and good luck! Go all LED! You will save huge in the long run!

& Don't forget that 20 amp switch :D

Awesome. ...that will make detailing even more fun...plus a professional look....keep us posted on the development. ...what lighting set up are you going with ?

I think you should mock it off this... Except all led :)

Yes, I am crazy about my lighting.

There is a forum named Garage Journal. They are a good resource for a guy and his garage. I got a lot of ideas from them when buiding mine. Issues like which floor paint etc. are answered.

4 large fluorescent lights in the front and 4 smaller fluorescent lights in the back of the garage.

Vapor barrier, side trim pieces (white trim under the shingles), and windows in place (the vapor barrier cover over the door opening is temporary so they can work inside without freezing their butts off - there is a temporary cover over the main garage doors opening as well)

Ceiling is up (open area is for pull-down so part of the overhead area can be used for storage)

Insulation is in

It is coming along nicely. I like the two level outlets. I had ours up high but really need a couple low too.
