Clay replacement - Problems???

Thanks for everyones input. This was more of a post to promote thought and conversation than to steer someone away from these new products.

I guess I was just really wondering if everyone has tested this for themselves or if they are simply blindly following the newest thing? I have held off on these simply because they have yet to be proven to be better than clay over an extended period of time...

I personally tried one of the speedy prep towels as I thought it was going to be a great product.

After using it a few times, I was not that impressed. It caused some marring on the paint that was not awful, but visible on darker colored cars.

I personally find the quickest and most thorough method to be Iron X spray, then follow up with a gentle grade of clay like Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay.

For anyone that has used any of the new clay bar replacement towel / pad.

Have you used clay afterwards to make sure you really removed all of the contamination? I have been hearing that some have tested with clay after doing decon using these products and have still gotten quite a bit of contamination in the clay... Thoughts?

I just wash mine off every few sections of a panel and use a soft toothbrush...Its a Spiderman toothbrush.

What are you talking about, autoscrubber? I noticed they have 2 different grades . What one do you use?

I use the FINE - Speed 1-2 PC7424xp / Speed 1 GG 6" / NO pressure!

I have had VERY good results with the speedy prep towel. If you come back and have to clay afterwards, you would probably have to clay the car twice to begin with.

That said, a detailer or enthusiast can never have too many tools in the tool chest, they just have to know when to grab for the right one. ;)

just want to echo some of the comments here from some experimenting this weekend.

my conclusion: these type of products work well, but on a heavily contaminated car, you still need to follow with clay.

Picked up a scrap hood from the body shop dumpster (don't judge me) just to play around with. Got it home and found it was loaded with above the surface contaminants.

I did half with the nanoskin using my 'normal' technique and amount of time spent. significant improvement in the surface, but did not pass the baggie test. went over it with clay magic blue which pulled up a fair amount of crap still

I did the other half with the nanoskin, but spent a lot more time, and even a little pressure which I normally wouldn't do. once again, big improvement, but clay magic blue was still needed (pulled up a little less this time around but still was significant enough that it had to be done)

What kind of nano skin do you have ?Med or fine?

Today I used my magna sponge and used some blackfire clay afterwards on just the hatchback of a Lexus .

It felt pretty smooth to the touch after using the sponge and I have to say I was surprised to see brown contaminants picked up on the clay!

I still say they are both good to have .I will take a picture of the clay if you want to see Troy.

Thanks for the test.

I totally believe you on the clay picking up more contamination.

I am thinking that making sure getting ALL of the contamination off is most important for those wanting to use the new coatings.

Find that using the speedy towel is very fast, it cuts through the bulk of the contaminants. If you're doing special work, follow up with clay. The Speedy towel really minimizes your work for you.

I also run IronX, and soon Opt's Eraser I'm sure. You can never have too many decontamination products.

Plus the Magna Sponge. It is no longer available, which is too bad because I really like it! No problems with marring and I did not have to follow up with clay when using it for rail dust removal.

Isn't the Ultima Elastrofoam Block the same as the Magna Sponge?

And you can still get the Magna Sponge @ ADS...

Yes it is. Last time I tried order Magna Sponges, ADS told me it was discontinued. I checked their site today and it shows it back in stock.
I had spent a lot of money on the Speedy Prep Towel as a replacement, now a replacement I don't need!

Thanks for the headsup on the availability. I had no idea!

Hey Troy, I tried one of those towels and I dunno, it just wasn't for me. I was really intrigued by nanoskin too but since I dont detail for a living and clay works so darn well why bother replacing something that works.
Just my thought. :rockon

I recently did a white car that had never been detailed. It felt like grit city!
I did the two bucket wash, Iron-X then the Speedy Prep Towel (FINE).
After reading here...I took out a new clay bar and decided to check it out.
I could find no contaminants on the clay bar on any of the sections tested.

I agree. :bigups

I do like the idea of these as a faster option especially if you are doing a quick wash and wax for a customer. But I think I would lean towards the Block or hand held pad. I personally don't like the idea of using these on a polisher.
