Ok so like 8 months ago I detail a silver turbo porsche. It wasn't in bad shape except for right on the back quarter above the back window on drive side. It had a really deep scratch. I looked at it and told customer I could lighten it up as best no way it was coming out. When he picked the car up he was really happy everything was good. Today he showed up here and the spot where the bad part was(I did hit this with some 2.5k and pretty aggressive compound) looks fine in the sun. But in the shade its like there is a shadow visable. It's not that bad and the paint readings I get from that spot to the next are almost Identical off by <.1 mils. Not to mention it's 8 months later, He said he hadn't noticed because he never drives the car and just saw it the other day... Ugh he is terrified about painting his silver car which I offered to do if he wanted. Any body ever seen a burn like I describe? and any way to polish back to life? I don't know. Thank you(I'm gonna go be sick now)
 
Hard to say without seeing it, but after you compound the spot did you get to polish it? Sometimes when your too far into the paint there's no return of it only a paint job in that area will return it back to where it should be. But pictures will help, sorry to hear this.
 
Pictures at various angles and lighting is going to be necessary. Could be it needs to be polished again with a lighter polish.

8 months is quite a while so there might be something else happening there like the start of clear coat failure..can't say that was caused by you thought
 
I know that feeling... it sucks. As said, it is hard to say without photos. Does the spot follow the scratch consistently? With readings not indicating significant thinning and 8 months worth of time I wonder if oxidation or some other chemical reaction has found it's way in through the scratch and under the clear. If it were me I would try a very light polish like 85rd just to see if it made any difference.
 
By your description it sounds as if the clear is scary thin in that area and possibly the paint beneath the clear is exhibiting a little oxidation. I'd put some fine polish on a cloth and gently go over the area by hand watching for color transfer.

If it does clean up then the only option I'm aware of other then painting is a couple of coats of a product like Optimum Opti-Coat that may help...
 
I actually had a debate with a detailer whom I respect very much and we are in total disagreement so the following is my opinion based on my experience...

It sounds like you thinned the clear coat in that area considerably, to the point there is a noticable 'patch' visible. It is also likely this area was there after your last session but you didn't see it. (Patches like this can be difficult to see in certain lighting conditions, even when inspecting the paint).

I would take a very light polish and rub the area, looking for color transfer. If you have complete strike through then you should get some color transfer.
 
Did the RID you could not get out look better? Perhaps he had a Buddy doctor you work. Hey, I am paranoid and I know it. 8 Months? That's a long time for his to wait to see it. Did you clock the mileage on the car when you detailed it? If so look for a inconsistance in the story (he never drives it)

Asuming he is straight with you, the only other thing I can think of is this, if you really thinned the clear, even without strike through, the surrounding area had thicker clear. This can cause a difference in the refraction of light (read, reflective gloss). I am in the Janitorial distribution business and we see this on floor finish that has been aggressivly scrubbed with an aggressive pad or on a gym floor. Those are easier to fix that the Porsche but the opticoat might help it this is the case.

Thanks guys and I'm becoming a little bit skepitcal my self. Considering it has been 8 months and I do log the miles on the cars I detail, It has 1600 miles on since it was brought in. I did full halogen correction on this the only thing I can think of is after I did the scratch which was all but invisible when I got done, is maybe on my finishing or jeweling step its burnt because I remember I was finishing that car out side and I wouldn't of been able to see it happen.. Any how still sickening and I just want to take care of it one way or another. Thanks guys ill keep you posted
 
Wow 1600 miles and 8 months then I would say sorry to him because of the long wait and mileage he put on it, but it's your customer so it's in your court.
 
Joe does it look anything like this? A few months ago I cleaned up my mom's 2000 Eldo and this appeared after washing it. Who knows why or what caused it but after polishing it was gone and has never came back. It almost looked like you could just peel the clear coat off.

Not at all, and that is strange lol. Its just a shadow you can only see in the right light
 
Hope its not a burn through!Sorry you have this worry.

Dont feel too bad if it is . If you do this long enough its bound to happen no matter how careful you are .Wet sanding and buffing is not an exact science !:inspector:

Some people think it will never happen to them but it even happens to the best ,even me.:D

I've seen thinned paint go to clear coat failure after a couple weeks in the sun. I did an old Jet Black 745i for a dealer friend back around 2005 I think. He had the body shop paint a few panels and then compound the whole car. When it came to me there were all ready a few thinned areas but I did what I could. I saw the car about 3 weeks later and could not believe how much of the paint had failed.
