OptiCoat 2.0?

Can you apply it with the Porter Cable or do you just apply it by hand?

It's a by hand thing. Rasky has a great video. I'll try to find the link and post it.

i would always think that my final finish before the permanent coating could have been better. i like to think that each time i detail my ride, it gets a little better than before.

I know this is going to sound weird but I think some of you can identfiy with this....If I try this on my car, what am I gonna do to satiate my detailing addiction? It's so final.....

and I'm serious....

I did check to see if it would seal gelcoat becasue I'd like to do some of that, and Optimum said no go in an email back to me...

Thats why I havent put in on my personal cars. I enjoy trying new stuff, polishing them ect. If I put this on that would be the end of it.

Yeah, This is kind of what I was thinking too but thought I had to be the only one.

It works fine on Gel Coat as long it's clean and oxidation free. I'm not sure why you were told otherwise.

Chris - I ask if it would seal and make glossy and here's what I got back:

Dear Mr. Ersly:

Thank you for your email and your interest in the Optimum Car Care products. We have tested Opti-Coat on gelcoat substrates and it adds a sheen with excellent water beading and dirt release properties, however, it does not make the surfaces glossy. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks again.

Glen, I see what you are saying about it being final and what are you going to do but it's all about what you want.

I bought it for my mother's car and I'll be using it on the wheels on my truck and a few areas that I hate dealing with like the grill and some of the plastic trim. Like you enjoy detailing too much to use it on my truck.

As far as adding gloss I will say this: OC really locks in the look of what you have. If you have scratches and a dull surface OC will lock all of it in. If you want it to look glossy you will need to get the finish to your liking before applying OC

I recap, OptiCoat 2.0 and OptiCoat (now called OptiGuard) are extremely easy-to-use, the biggest problem in application is going to be two fold.

1) Make sure you are happy with the condition of the paint prior to application. Once sealed it will be more difficult to correct as you have to polish through the coating first.

2) Wipe down any high-spots (appear as streaks or smudges that don't go away) prior to the product hardening. Otherwise these streaks will become permanent and will need to be machine polished away.

I personally have found that you can 'wax' Opti-Coat or apply a sealant over it if you wish to alter the look, so there is no fear IME there.

OptiCoat sounds like a great coating. I've also shied away because I like trying new products or just adding a coat of LSP.

The comments that you can actually layer an LSP on top of it to alter or freshen the look (although the LSP durability may be compromised some), has me thinking though.

On a DD that does not get much attention it sounds like a must have.

Todd.....have you topped OptiCoat with BFWD or MS?? If so, how did it respond (looks, slickness, durability)? Thanks.

You can use any LSP you want on top of OC2.0. But due to the properties of OC2.0 the durability will be lacking... I would say BFMS would look very nice on top of OC but I haven't tried it as of yet. I find that a simple spray wax or QD after washing is all that is needed. (DG AquaWax, FK 425, OCW, ReLoad)

I am using ReLoad on top of CQuartz. I really do like ReLoad mostly because it works in conjunction with CQ and it gives the same type of finish and properties. It leaves a slick and very hydrophobic surface behind. I think this is also why people like it on OC2.0. It doesn't really mess with or alter the water sheeting or dirt releasing ability.

Hi Glen,

In your previous post, you said "it was a no go" as if Opti Coat couldn't/shouldn't be use on gel coat. As on any surface it is applied to, the gloss and clarity will come from your prep work. Opti coat is an LSP that protects all your hard work and helps to maintain the look longer than any other product...but it goes on thin so it will not "add" gloss or fill any problems that weren't corrected. It works well on any properly prepped surfaces.

Let me know if you need further assistance,
Chris

Actually, Opti Coat IS an LSP so nothing is needed. Some people who like to touch their cars have grown used to the slick feel of wax, but it will add nothing functional to the coating. And, carefully choose what you top it with as some products will change the beading and actually can attract dirt while they are on top of it.

I agree with Troy, any topper's life will be reduced because OC won't let it bond well. You can only expect a month or less from your topper. For this reason we recommend Optimum Car Wax of Optimum Instant Detailer to add slickness without wasting time or money.

How does opti coat hold up to industrial fallout? I work by a steel mill and rail yard wondering if it repels the fallout or still have to clay?

I'm pretty sure you will still have to clay or use some sort of chemical cleaner like IronX. The nice thing about OC is that it's impervious to such chemical cleaners. ;)

Thanks for the reply Rasky. in the spring i am going to apply opti coat looks like a great product and your application video makes it look pretty easy. Thanks again.
