Android or Apple?

Curious what your thoughts are. Which do you have? Which would you rather have? Why? Which is more versatile? It may come down to opinion, but tell me what you think.

Im a die hard Android user. I have a DROID X and a Samsung Fascinate, both heavily modded. My wife has an iPhone that is jail broken, and while its a nice phone, both of my Droids will smoke hers when it comes to speed and customization abilities. Droids however are notoriously buggy, while the Apples are super stable. It all comes down to what you like imo.

Android phones will be more versatile, if by that you define being able to do whatever you want to do with the phone. The iPhone, like pretty much every other Apple product, is more locked-down, and will usually limit you in the way you can use it - the price you pay for the great user interface.

I love my Android phone; it does everything that I need to to do. I've had my Samsung GalaxyS for a year now and still love it. Recently upgraded it to Gingerbread and it was like a new phone all over again. I probably will be sticking with Android for a while, but since my cell carrier (CSpire, formerly Cellular South) just got in the 4S IPhone its sparked my curiosity. I'll likely not switch though, already used to Android, no since changing now.

The thing I like most about Androids is the ability to root the phone. Both of mine have custom ROMs, Voodoo kernels, custom themes and boot/shutdown animations, etc. On a solid WIFI connection, they are both faster than any laptop Ive ever used. The downside to ramping the speed up (its controllable) is battery life and temperature. Its actually possible to overheat them if they are turned up for too long.

The Iphone 4S is much faster than the 4. I will always buy the Iphone, but I am a basic user. So it works for me. When ever I read Iphone comparos the Iphone usually wins overall. Also, just look at the droid names. They are coming up with these attention grabbing names to get your business. (M2C)

I love my iPhone, but apple does some weird stuff. Like when I updated my 3G to OIS4 software and it ran like crap. Their response was to buy a new phone, not fix the problem. I have thought about an Anroid, but their are so many that it confuses me, so my next phone will probably be an 4s, or if I can hold out, a 5.

I like the IPhone but the keyboard is just a tad small for thumb typing. With an Otterbox cover typing can turn a simple message into an alien language if you go too fast. It may be due to the extra plastic on the screen. Editing can lead to a half sent or garbled message because of the double tap send also.
Like Todd said OS system downloads can be sometimes a problem also lengthy. Overall though after 3 years no real problems. Would like more battery life though.

I'm an Android guy. Here are my reasons (and these are totally subjective to my needs and not meant to be applicable to all users)

I have an HTC G2

1. It has a slide out keyboard. A must for my fat fingers. I can't stand typing on a screen. I even have a keyboard for my iPad because that one is too much for me too.

2. I overclocked the stock 800MHz processor to 1.9GHz running stable at 1.5GHz all day long. Do that with an Apple product.

3. No need to jailbreak to get non market apps. If someone makes an app for an android, you just tell the phone to accept it and you can install it.

4. No constant updates to keep up with which are primarily only pushed to discourage jailbreakers.

5. With the exception of Apples latest hook (siri) an Android device can do ANYTHING an iOS device can do and then some. There isn't anything in the app store for Apple that isn't available either exactly or similarly in the google market.

6. My G2 does wifi calling. When I'm in the Philippines I only have to connect to the wifi in my office and all of my calls get routed from the T-Mobile network right to my phone without any roaming or anything. My outgoing calls go through wifi back to the network and nobody knows I'm not at home. The G2 is one of the only phones that does this and it is a very valuable part of why I love this phone.

7. Android has a hundred different phones with different RAM, processor speeds, options, and sizes. Iphones come in... well... they come in iPhone. Apple likes to think that everybody is the same and they all need the same device. So if you aren't happy with the one you have, then you have to wait till they make a new one to get anything better. And even then sometimes they just put an S behind the model number and throw in some software tweaks that don't really make the phone that much better than what you had before.

8. What is the deal with Apple not putting SD card slots in the iPhone?? That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. This is why the Android tablets are starting to rock so much. USB slots, SD Card slots, and every bit as much power as an iPad. Even the market on Android tablets is catching up. My son is saving up right now to buy my iPad from me and I'm saving up to get an Android tablet. The iPad is an overgrown iPod and the limitations are starting to frustrate me.

I'm not saying the iPhone is stupid or anything. But I am saying that it is basically a toy. If it was a true enterprise device then they would offer more features across a wider variety of phone options running the operating system. If you want versatility in your phone, then the iPhone is a bad choice. You have way more options in the Android world. But if you don't care about processor speed, RAM, or anything else like that, and if you really don't want to do research to determine which phone is right for you, then the iPhone is probably a safe bet. It will do everything you want it to do as long as your expectations are fairly low. If you dream of a faster processor or more hardware features then I would avoid the iPhone.

I prefer to spend time away from my phone and face to face with people. so I keep it simple.

Put your phone down man, and talk to me!..I'm right next to you! lol

Happy iPhone user here. I had the 3G for 2 yrs and have had the 4 since it was released. As much as I want the 4S I will wait till my upgrade is due. Never had any issues with either of my phones and I simply love the OS and it's ease of use. Camera and video is top notch as well.

If you're computer savvy and want to customize then the Android is probably a better choice. If you just want a smart phone that works well and have no need for overclocking and things like that, then go with iPhone. They are all great products IMO...simply choose what best works for you. :bigups

Thanks so much for all your input. I dropped my phone (HTC Evo Shift) and am considering options for a replacement. I think I will simply pay the deductible on the coverage and get a replacement of the same phone. When the upgrade comes around I am torn between an iphone and the Galaxy S2.

One more satisfied Droid user with one slight exception. My Motorola Droid will turn itself back on about 10 minutes after I've turned it off unless it is charging. Once I turn it off a second time it respects my decision. This is a problem known to both Verizon and Motorola and for whatever reason (probably cause it's a 3G and not a 4G) doesn't get any attention for a fix. ;)

Hmm, now that I was talking good about my phone it dies on me completely  Oh well, luckily it was under warranty.

I started with a Blackberry and switch to and am a happy Droid user. I have been seriously looking at the iPhone for some time now as my contract is up and I can upgrade for a good deal.

I am very happy with the Android system and what it offers. I would consider myself a power user but I haven't rooted my phone or anything. The amount of functions and customizable setting make it great for techies and people who want control over everything.

The iPhone on the other hand is very intuitive and easy to learn. The boss got a Droid for his wife and after 3 weeks she hated it and they swapped it for an iPhone. She wasn't convinced but after 2 days she was in love and has never looked back. That is how easy and well laid out everything is.

At the end of the day both are great options. It just depends on what you are looking for and what you need.
