Steve...I had a problem with EX-P

you could be right... we have lots of farming here near fresno.. it gets very humid sometimes., my polish and polymer sealer work fine .. ill keep that in mind though

no the problem clearly was that his applicator was not damp...temperature will have no bearing on application of EX-P as long as it's over 40.

applying during the evening is also not a good idea for any products..once the evening moisture is in the air it becomes hard to remove polishes and waxes as rhillstr said the solvents will not evaporate correctly.

Upon going over the directions I noticed it said that too, I read it before I applied, guess I missed it. I will try it out and report back.

My 2 cents -

I applied EX-P over VM about seven weeks ago to two different cars. One car is a garage queen, while the other is a daily driver which has been rained on numerous times. Both are holding up very well with no observed blotchiness.

When you said you used a dime sized amount, how much area did that cover? Once the applicator is primed, a dime sized amount can cover an average size car door panel. Try going over each panel 2-3 times to ensure complete and even coverage.

What car wash shampoo were you using? Do you have hard water? Some shampoos leave behind a lot of residue, and hard water may exacerbate the problem. If the paint feels "grabby" after washing, you may be dealing with soap residue.

rhillstr & poorboy thanks for that info about humidity etc. Man I still have a lot to learn about detailing.

well I redid the car today and heres how it went:

I dampened the applicator this time, it spread easier and more evenly but still dried quick and was a bit of a pain to work, but much better. It did feel grabby, I was using NXT wash prior to this. The look is awesome and no more blotchiness. I used about a dime size or smaller per panel. I noticed the less you use...the better....truly. I started going further and further with it using less and less. I had to also keep dampening the applicator, no biggie though. I will wash it next weekend and give reports of that.

I would say now that I would use it again, it buffed off hella easier and spread better, about like NXT I suppose. It is alot different feeling than any other sealant I used prior to this though.

Steve definintely gives plenty of information on his instructions, sometimes it is easy to miss a word or two, but you see how much a word or two can make a difference. Glad it worked better for you. You may also want to check out the pva applicators as they work well with alot of different products and help with THIN applications

Eric

some people like Natty himself prefer using an open celled foam sponge, maybe that would be easier if you are not use to making thin layers...but it sounds like you got the hang of it at the end:)

PVA spongers > *

They rock at applying sealants or waxes. I own nearly 10, msot just sit there, but they are there if I need them!

I've applied EX with a Meguiar's (or other) foam applicator. When I first start, I give the applicator a light mist with a good QD, then I put several tiny dots of the EX on the applicator, and lightly spread it all over the surface of the applicator to "prime" the entire surface. (don't apply to much)

With a properly primed applicator, and using light coats, there should be no problem applying or removing EX.

:yeah
I prime the pad with Spray & Wipe

Hey awd330, does applying ex-p over the vm give good and durable results? Did you apply anything before the vm, like polish or ssr1? Do you think washing...clay....vm....ex-p would have good results? I am always looking for a quicker or easier process for a good detail and from what i have read, VM is a fairly easy product to apply by hand. My concerns were that the ex-p wouldnt work real great over the glazey/waxy VM.
thanks

I've had the VM and EX-P combo for about 11 weeks now, and it seems to be holding up fine on my garaged vehicle. There were no preceding prep steps (except for either a wash or Spray & Wipe) since the car was already in excellent condition.

Clay, VM, EX-P can be a good process. It all depends on the condition of your finish. If you have anything more serious than some light marring, you will need at least one more step between the clay and VM.

Another suggestion for an easy combo is PwC and EX-P. PwC has just a bit more bite than VM, so it will handle minor surface defects more easily than VM. This combo isn't as wet looking as the VM, EX-P combo, but it has an advantage in clarity and metallic sparkle.

Would it make sense to use a QD when removing? Not a carnuba QD like QD + but more like megs QD or spray and wipe. Just a suggestion.

I had the same problem which I solved by increasing dry time and applying thinner layers which took some practice. My car is silver so it isnt easy to see where you are covering so I need to really go over each panel a couple of times and "work" the ex-p iin to ensure complete coverage.

By the way Steve- I didnt get a PVA with my EX-P order. Boo Hoo. I will however order a couple with my next order to try them.

All in all I LOVE the products thanks to help from Steve, AWD, Elortt and other PB experts!!

I've never really had a problem with EX or EX-P. I like to use a damp(with Quik Shine) Viking Handi-Grip applicator. Both products are a bit thick, so they do take a bit of getting used to . I like putting VM underneath since not only does it look wetter, the slickness of the Vanilla Moose helps EX spread easier.
