any differnce in clay bars?

I was at walmart and looked at the 2 they had. One was Meguiars and the other was Turtle Wax Ice. They were about a few cents different. The Meguiars had a container for the bars (2) and a cloth . The Ice did not. What about the other brands? Are they all the same performance wise? Thanks

I have not tried either of the products mentioned. I have kept with either the ClayMagic, Mother's, and the clay that PB's carried some years back. There are definitely some tactile differences between the products, but in regards to performance non that are easily discernable. One exception to that is the difference between the ClayMagic Blue and Red bars, but that is intentional.

Given your choice; check the size of the bar itself. I would buy the most clay for the money. If the bars are equal, then decide if you want to spend the extra few cents for the storage box and the cloth (MF?). You probably won't go wrong either way. Could buy both. You will use the clay over time.

There's different "grades" of clay - some people call it different abrasive levels. The stuff you find on the shelf is all pretty much going to be the same. My favorite would be the Mother's, followed closely by the blue Clay Magic. If I could not find either of those, I'd go with the Meg's clay kit.

They are not all the same. I can't speak of the Turtle wax clay bar but the Meguiar's clay is super mild and takes a lot more rubbing than the Claymagic Blue that you can find at Auto Zone and Advance auto parts. While the Meguiar's does take a little more effort it does produce good results.

Then there are different grades too (mild, medium aggressive and aggressive) though you will only find the mild at the OTC places. I haven't used the Mother's brand yet but am planing on picking some up today.

I would reccomend the Clay Magic Blue.

The Mother's is the closest thing I have found OTC that resembles the elastic-type clay (both in texture and results) that everyone seems to rave so much about.

Thanks JP Maybe I just found my new production clay. I got a stash of the good stuff for my personal vehicle.

I have some Clay Magic red right now and I'm not that crazy about it. It seems to flake off a lot more than the blue. My fav clay hands down is Car Brite purple, but if you don't have a rep close by their stuff is a pain to get.

I don't recall having that problem with the Red ClayMagic clay. It has been a while since I needed that much clay "power" though so maybe I've blocked it from memory. :)

I agree with JP's assessment of the Mother's clay. More elastic, means easier to knead. The ClayMagic Blue is stickier. But both are effective for their intended use.

What is it about the CarBrite Purple claybar that you like? You prefer it to which other bars? There are a few CarBrite delivery trucks that I see about town. I'm sure I could flag one down.

I use Meg clay alot because it is OTC, and I always seem to be out and don't have time to order and wait. It is a milder clay but IMO it's good stuff. I wish I could just buy claybars OTC withought having to buy the kit. I have only seen replacement clay bars once ever OTC in my area.

shuddleston, I don't know if you are looking specifically for the Meg's clay, but if not you might try some of the automotive paint suppliers in your area. I can pick up the ClayMagic claybars w/o the kit from several locations near me. It looks like the closest listed distributor to you though might be Topeka, though if you contact him he may be able to provide you with other options.

As for the kits, the Mother's kit includes their Showtime QD. A really nice QD OTC or otherwise. I never mind having a bottle of that around.

The dealership that 80 percent of my work comes from has a bodyshop that don't believe in tape, so I usually deal with a lot of overspray. The Car Brite purple is pretty aggessive and cuts through overspray like nothing. It lasts forever too. There is really nothing bad to say about it and its about the same price as Clay Magic. I've tryed Mothers also. It worked well for normal prep but I never tryed it on overspray.

Thanks for the advice I'll give that a shot, or just plan beter - I don't mind the extra's just don't want to pay for them!

About the Turtle Wax ICE. Its not the same as a true clay bar. I threw mine in the trasha few years ago. I beleive that was the consensus t the time about it. As for clay, I have tried Clay magic blue and Red. I now only have and use Elastic Clay from Poorboys World. I got at least 10 bars left so Im not going out and trying other clay any time soon.

Well, there's always this................

i use MEGS Blue Clay. Works awesome for me.

Have tried the MEGs white clay kit you get in store but just wasn't strong enough.

I can't remember correctly so I will try as best as possible to remember the difference.

As far as what each color clay does, its best to look at it in how many passes over an area it takes to remove your contaminates.

MEGS Smooth White Clay: 9-10 passes

MEGS Mirror Glaze Blue Clay: 5-6 passes

MEGS Mirror Glaze Red Clay: 3-4 passes

You just have to be careful using the blue and red clay bars from Meguiars. Because of their level of aggressiveness they can put some light scratches into your beautiful finish. From my experience when I tested it, the MEGS Red Clay is way to aggressive and just marred the paint so I never use it. Strictly blue. Does the job and speeds up the time.

Do you want to sell your red clay?

I've proven myself wrong on this one. Car Brite purple is med grade. I'm working on a terrible overspray job right now and did a side by side with the 2. CM red is way more aggressive. When my new computer comes in Ill be posting the pics of it.
