CA Motorcycle License???

I been thinking about getting myself a bike for commuting to work. I was wondering what are the requirments to obtain a M1 license? From what i read i have to take the basic ridercourse but it says if your under 21. I turn 21 next month, so do i only have to take the written exam? I been looking online on the DMV website and cant seem to find the requirements if your older then 21. Does anyone on here from CA have their M1 license? or know anything about this? Any help would be awesome.

A "basic rider course" is just like taking behind the wheel drivers ed. Classes run something like 6-16 hours. All first time riders will have to take both a written test and a riding test -- the latter consists of riding in a straight line, then a circle then through some cones then back down a straight line (or something super close to that). It's all at very low speeds, in fact when I took mine, they made me redo it slower than just idle speed. Hope this helps, good luck :)

What ever the requirements are, I would take the riders course. Riding a motorcycle on freeways and the likes of that takes some education / caution. The course will give you that, and make it safer for you in the long run!

Other than that you need to pass the written exam, driver test / course if you are under 21...not to sure about over 21...on the drivers test...

I went to the DMV today and talked to someone. They say i dont have to take the riders course if im 21 but im deff going to. After that ill i have to do is take the written test. I would normally have to take a drivers test at the DMV but if i take the course they waive it. The offer the class here in Cloverdale at the fairgrounds, so im in luck!!
 
Cool good luck with the motorcycle. I want one so bad but my mom said that i cant get one till im 18 :mad: She says that im 2 young to die :lol2: and that i will drive it fast nd crazy :notme::notme::dnaughty

My mom wouldnt let me get a bike either till i was 18 but i just now able to afford one lol. Shes still against it mainly cuz shes a nurse and sees a lot of bike victims, they call them organ doners. Just drive safe as you can i guess.
I already have my bike picked out. Its 07 Yamaha R6 Raven :rockon, i really want a R1 but i think it would be smart to start out with a lil slower bike lol.
What kind of bike do you want?
 
I want a Honda CBR 1000RR soooo bad. I found one but it got sold. My mom works at a couple hospitails as a speech theripist and she treats alot of motorcycle crash victims. I'm on the fire dept and have seen a couple bad motorcycle crashes. But i still really want one.

The raven is a nice bike but isn't it an R1 Raven

They make a Raven in both R1's and R6's.
That honda is a BA bike, a buddy of mine has one, thing is insane. What color u thinkin of getting?
 
Black/Metallic gray or Red/Black i do not like the new 08 so i would get one in the 2000-07 range.

This is the 08 notice the license plate holder i think it looks dumb and it has tiny pipes.

You might as well get the faster bike because you will eventually get it (you know you will lol) just take it easy and have self control (might save you some money in the long run)

I think the R1 is 1000cc and the R6 is 600cc.

A couple of things.
1. The R6 is not a slow bike by any means.
2. The R1 is scary fast where the R6 is just crazy fast.
3. Either one can be a real handful for a beginning rider.
R6 - 123 hp, 360 lb.
R1 - 180 hp, 385 lb.
Ball park figures, but think about it.
R6 - 2.9 lb. per hp
R1 - 2 lb. per hp
Base Corvette - 8.75 lb. per hp
Z06 Corvette - 7 lb. per hp.
I ride an old Honda CB650SC Night Hawk that only has 72 hp, 434 lb. - 6 lb. per hp that was roadtested back in 1985 at 12.1 @ 108 in a 1/4 mile.
That isn't slow and the R1 and R6 make it look like it's tied to a tree.
Respect either one of them.

I deff agree the 07 looks way better, i dont really like the rounded look that much on the 08. The older R6s are like that. Both color combos look hella good tho, dont think you can go wrong either way.
I really do want a R1 but its just to big of a bike for me. Im not that big of a guy. The R6 is just about perfect, the R1 is to wide for my legs and my foot is only half way on the ground. Also if i lay it down i will have to be able to pick it up by myself. The R6 is around 400 pounds and i think the R1 is between 500 and 600.
I can always just slap a turbo on there :rockon:rockon:dnaughty:dnaughty

Couldnt agree more. I have nothing but respect for bikes, once you start to get cocky thats when you end up in the hospital.
 
Just over a week ago,my friend tried out a buddy's 2006 R6, that thing has a lot of torque even in 1st gear according to him. Don't go for black, it won't do you any good if other drivers can't see you.

Tell you the truth i never even thought of that, sense the Raven is pure black lol i was also looking at the electric blue/black. Nice color combo.

Those are Way to big of bikes for a first driver. Why not a 175cc-275cc on/off road bike that was popular back in the late 70's early to midd 80's. Run well on road and off on the trails. My brother still drive our 175cc Kawasaki we bought in 1980. Goes where it has to. RANDAL

I have had a bunch of bikes over the years, but none in the last 15 years. I bought an o7 R6 in April, and LOVE it. I too would like an R1, but if you have not had a bike before, or a lot of riding experience, the R6 is plenty of bike, if not too much.

As for the license, I would HIGHLY recommend taking the riding course (MSF course). I will teach you way more than you think. The other advantage if the course is that it takes the place of the riding test at the DMV. You have to either take the MSF course, or the riding test at the DMV. Either way you still have to take the written. Also, the test course at the DMV is very tight. I could not get the R6 to turn tight enough in the circle. Not much of a turning radius on that bike. I borrowed a 350 enduro and did fine.

Whatever bike you decide on, be careful. R6's, R1's, CBR's GSXR's are all very fast, and not for rookies. Just ride within your own limits, not someone else's.
 
A possible side benefit to taking the MSF Riders course could be a break on your insurance.
It would be worth checking with your agent.
