form what I know (and it ain’t much) Dr g got sick, and while on leave opt went off the rails. No idea why Mike left auto geek, but he left 3D because tunc sold the company (real douche move if he knew it was in the works when he coaxed Mike over).

You’re correct about Dr G getting sick and was too overreliant on untrustworthy people. As a result, things happened that wouldn’t normally ever have been tolerated.

But you’re incorrect about Tunch selling 3D. Quite the opposite actually.

so what’s the scoop then with 3D? Mike left on his own?

yup, right here:

MPE Partners Announces Strategic Investment in 3D International

but I also agree with astronomy in that I read (philips forum) that trunc did something that wasn’t cool.

Not sure what 3D’s arrangement was with Mike, but if anything, by Tunch buying brands like Hi-Tech, P&S & PRO (and more to come I’m sure), it could’ve made for greater opportunities. Can’t see why he’d claim to be mad that Tunch sold 3D, when in fact he didn’t.

This is a quote from MP from about a year ago when he joined Dr. Beasley`s: "I was energized when I went to 3D too, it`s not my fault the owner sold the company to a Private Equity Group and that just wasn`t going to work out for me personally and of course, I wish everyone that stayed the best of luck."

Sounds like he quit without knowing the real story. Or maybe there’s more behind it than he eluded to.

I don’t think trunc bought those companies. To me it reads that he sold out (partnered) with an equity firm and he will stay on for a few years. Likely signed a non compete contract.

but yes, none of us really know what really went down.

I have no idea BUT(lol) i read somewhere Tunch is still heavily involved in product development but sold most of the company to Hi-tech. But really i don`t care lol 3D is a very solid company with some very reasonable prices on their chemicals. I will continue to use orange degreaser and towel kleen. ONE is really good too i just struggled with the wipeoff too much for my liking.

One thing about it I`d take 3D over Dr. Beasley`s any day of the week. The prices are really up there! And the name and branding is really not good IMO.

Keep in mind, his name is Tunch. Not trunc. And even through a press release may read a certain way, it’s not always written to portray complete accuracy. Having worked with Tunch for several years, I think I’m pretty clear on what has occurred with this whole thing. When I say that he didn’t sell 3D, you can be pretty certain that it’s accurate and not speculative like what most here have tried doing.

Hi-Tech is located near me in Metro Detroit and is relatively a very small company. No way in heck did it have the capital to buy a $100M+/yr company. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

I’ve used towel kleen for a long time. Fantastic product, and very value priced. Their yellow degreaser is the best tire/wheel cleaner I’ve used. I did pick up some superior fury to try.

I don’t know you. You’re a “dude on the internet”. (No offense or not meant to,start a fight) technically Mike philips is also a dude on the internet, but I know him more than I know you. If Mike said Tunch sold to private equity than I’m going with that.

I just hope 3D doesn’t start cost cutting and screw with the formulas

Sorry, with all due respect, I don’t know you either, especially when you’re not using your real name here. For context, I worked for 3D for several years, helped them formulate and launch the HD Car Care line, did marketing/support on this and other forums (check out the 3D/HD sub-section of Autopia), opened up a 3D/HD based detail shop (in Detroit) and have known the management staff at Hi-Tech(also in Detroit) for 30 years so I kinda know a thing or two about this whole situation. But, if you’re more comfortable getting other people’s take on things then more power to you. I’m not going to continue talking about hypotheticals when I know the real story. And there’s no way in the world Tunch would ever sacrifice quality for cost so don’t go down that road either. With what 3D brings to the table with respect to these acquisitions, if anything, quality in all the brands will continue to improve all while offering them at beyond competitive prices.

Maybe we can have a "tele-chemist" where you can call a chemist to discuss chemistry stuff...ha. Personal trainers? Why not personal chemists. (sarcastic mood).

As for MP and 3D, I am not sure why Mike would be consulted if the 3D was getting investors. I assume you do it to get more working money to expand and not a golden parachute to leave, What was MP`s role at 3D?

Tunch is not a spring chicken, it may be that whatever went on is part of a longer-term exit strategy. That would sort of fit with both Mike Phillips` take of it, and with David Fermani`s first-hand knowledge. It may also be that Mike Phillips felt he got burned at AutoGeek when a bunch of corporate guys from far away got involved, and he felt the same thing would happen at 3D, so he decided head somewhere with a more compact management structure.

well whatever really happened, or however the deal is structured I hope 3D continues doing what they are doing. I use a few of their products and have always been happy.

mike indicated in his forum that his past experience with companies post merger have been negitive. Moving to 3D had him “energized” but he was disappointed when trunch “sold out” to a private equity firm (allegedly). That’s his story. We have another story here, so who knows for sure? Trunch

ultimately trunch does what’s best for him, and Mike does what’s best for Mike.
