What to protect expensive multi-spoke wheels with? (CCW content)

Hey guys-

The centres are brushed and clear coated so that’s the great news! Much easier to keep clean.

I purchased the Sonax wheel detailing kit which comes with the famous wheel cleaner that they make.

I’ve also included a premium horse hair wheel brush for the face of the wheel and to get into the spokes, I went with the long wheel brush (forgot who it’s made by)

What do you guys recommend for protection? Keep in mind: no rain. No snow. This is a fair weather car that may see 3-5k per year!

Definitely go with a wheel coating. Now is the perfect time to apply the coating since those wheels are new and not even mounted yet. I haven’t used the McKee’s product but I wonder about the longevity of a spray on product as compared with a more traditional coating that wipes on like a paint coating. For the last several years I’ve been using 22ple, but Kamikaze’s wheel coating and the Green products look interesting. For me, longevity is important with wheels since it’s a hassle to remove wheels (for me at least) to reapply coating to the back of the spokes and barrels.
Coated wheels are much easier to clean, and can be maintained with a spray sealant/ coating booster like Hydro2, or Gyeon wetcoat every other month or so.
 
I just did a new set of wheels for my Honda, right out of the box , with CquartzUK, and Reload. After an alcohol wash to start. They look great.

It`s the same as any other coating. Apply to an applicator block or sponge and wipe evenly on the wheels, buff off the high spots. I use it on my wheels and it`s amazing. Cleaning is a breeze and I haven`t noticed and degradation and I`m at about 8 months.

What do you guys think about the sonax spray sealant that has been getting great reviews?

It’s a aerosol paint sealant. Would this work or for wheels not so much ?

My opinion is you need a full blown ceramic coating for wheels. Because brake dust is terrible. I would`nt leave it to a spray silica, or any type of just spray on /wipe off. Now once I get the wheels done, I use Hydro2 for maintenance.
 
I just replaced my wheels and used gtechniq wheel armor (C5) one coat, and topped with EXO v3, 2 coats. Did this before the tires were mounted. Very, very slick. Brake dust wipes off easy.
 
You have many options available to you. Some have provided some good options as well.

I`ve used all of these and they all work about the same. They are all pretty straight forward to use.

Cquartz UK - Even though it is a paint coating it works pretty well on wheels.

Gyeon Rim

This is a great combo as well. Currently have it on my wheels.
 
Since my lips on these wheels are polished, would a good aluminum polish be a good idea just to rid of minor finishing scratches ?

Once applied, I just spray em down, hit them with a wash mitt and whatever is left in wash bucket at end of wash, rinse & dry. Never bothered to maintain with anything else. Pressure washer spray cleans em up fine...havent used a wheel brush in over a year...no need.

Have about 12k summer miles on Gyeon Rim, applied 07/2016, about 7500 year round miles on Kamikaze Stance, applied 07/2017 and about 18k year round miles on Kamikaze Stance applied 07/2017. All are still `spray, light wipe, dry and go` solid performing products.

Have used Gyeon Rim, Gtechniq C5, IGL Wheel and Kamikaze Stance. All are decent with Stance being easiest to apply and, so far, have the most miles on them.

Definitely worth the time and effort no matter what you use.

Yes you can do that. Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer works great for that. You also have the option of using a silica spray sealant like Gyeon Cure, CarPro Reload, Blackfire SiO2 Spray Seal, etc.
 
Ill be researching wheel coatings this weekend boys!

I was gonna throw the wheels on and call it a day.

I do have some Sonax ceramic coating too.

Thoughts ??

The only thought I have is that this particular coating has held up pretty well on the paint of my daily driver. You could give it a try and see how it holds up on the wheels. Sonax claims it is a 1 year coating but with Sonax BSD or Polymer Net Shield it can extend the life of the coating.

it is really easy to use. It`s a two part coating. There is a recommended wait time of 1 hour between the base coat and gloss coat.

It is up to you if you want to polish the wheels. That will get the wheels prepped for the coating and will allow the coating to last longer. Claying is not a bad idea. I would also recommend some sort of prep wipe after polishing prior to coating them.

To make it really simple you can use Sonax BSD every few washes. No need to add PNS right away. I have not used the new sonax spray and seal product but that is another option. All I know from speaking to the Sonax reps is that PNS and BSD share similar chemistry to the coating.
