New Member, Noob "Detailer", and Some Questions...

I`ve taken the plunge and ordered what should be most of my chemicals. Collinite 845, CG Speed Wipe, CG All Clean+, CG Lightning Fast, 3D Pink Car Soap, and Griot`s Car Wash.... Maybe one day I can graduate to paste waxes and switch to 476S, unless they don`t play well with Xpel Ultimate.

Now all I think I need is a dual action orbital (I`m thinking the Griot`s 6" with a 5" backplate), and exterior trim protectant (probably Wolfgang`s). Not really sure on the pad, I`ll probably just buy Griot`s red waxing pads unless someone has a suggestion for something significantly better.
 
kestrel452- If *I* were buying a polisher today, I`d probably get the Griot`s Boss15 instead of their "regular" 6", but it does cost more.

Their Red Waxing Pad is *very* good IMO, but don`t use too much 845 on it or you`ll *NEVER* get all the excess out! Not that I`ve ever found it to really matter...

That bottle of 845 oughta last you for *MANY* years, even if you`re waxing a Suburban all the time....don`t use too much.

Sounds like you`re getting all set up!
 
Another question for you gentlemen (and ladies) out there...

What do you recommend for applying to weather stripping as a protectant? I have a few products currently in my arsenal to choose from: CG Silk Shine, CG VRP, and Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome :cool:

I have all 3 of those you mentioned and personally prefer the wolfgang, looks better and lasts longer

Wurth Rubber Care (aerosol or "gummi stick") or 1Z Gummi Plege. But on most exterior window seals/etc. I just use a Spray Wax or ValuGard Fast Finish.

Do you prefer the nextzett Gummi Pflege Stift, or Sonax GummiPfledger? Those are the ones I found on Amazon :)

I was expecting to hear that...perhaps the money spent on Silk Shine was just wasted.. The VRP is at least a crowd favorite for tires.
 
My opinion is that there are a *lot* of good products out there. I wouldn`t worry too much about the actual manufacture as you will get opinions to use multiple different ones, and a lot of that is subjective. Focus on quality to start with and then switch products if something just doesn`t seem to be working for you. The important thing is to be comfortable with your process.

Sorry, never tried the Sonax, only the Wurth and the 1Z/NZ. I doubt you`d go *way* wrong with [whatever choice] though I did find that Wurth vs. 1Z diff worth the extra $ on the particular vehicle in question.

I have 2 of these, not the Silk Shine and would love to hear your take on the product ??
As for VRP good stuff, like a lotion protectant you work in. Lasts maybe 2 weeks.
WETS I`m working with now, I put this on my tires. Which has kept my tires looking new 6 weeks B4 reapplying.
So I put it on all my vinyl and plastic, great stuff. Like a clear liquid, thinner than water.

If it was me, I`d try all 3, see which I prefer. The winner goes on the driver door :lol:
 
I have another question since you`ve all been extremely helpful so far.

I noticed that on Xpel`s website they say to avoid waxes with high amounts of solvents, as they will degrade the clear coat layer of the film over time.

I just called up Collinite to ask about what they thought would be the best wax that`d be safe for the Xpel Ultimate film and still easy to use...the representative on the phone immediately responded by saying he was concerned about the solvent content in their waxes and that I should ask Xpel about it. This was without me even mentioning Xpel`s warning.

Barring the possibility of Collinite actually sending me an MSDS to show Xpel (who would probably say steer clear anyway and try to sell me their own sealants which are junk), what would the next best recommendation be for a durable year-round LSP sealant? Preferably something easy to use, won`t ruin trim, and will work on head/tail lamps. I need to find something that`ll actually work to protect the paint and protect against the plethora of environmental contaminants plaguing Chicago (like road salt, bird bombs and diesel smog). Being able to function as a windshield water heading product is a plus :)

I`d really rather just use *one* product to seal the paint, rather than a separate product for panels wrapped in Xpel.
 
Called Xpel, and then Collinite back...

Long story short, both Collinite reps recommended NOT using any of their waxes on cars that have Xpel. Collinite uses naphtha as their solvent base, a lot of it, so any of you guys with Xpel PPF should steer clear of Collinite products. Both naphtha and kerosene are solvent bases that Xpel mention by name when addressing products that will degrade the clear coat layer over time.

EDIT:
So let me backtrack a little here... I just saw a thread on AutoGeekOnline where a fellow brought up this very same topic just a day or two ago. Another user posted the MSDS for the recommended sealant that Xpel manufactures, and it`s 10% naphtha, and another 10% of other aromatic hydrocarbons. So I ask the question...Why does Xpel say to avoid naptha and other petroleum distillates, but then blends their own sealant product meant for the film with 20% of what they say will "potentially de-gloss" it!?!?!? I am starting to think this is just a marketing ploy to sell their own aftercare products...

I`d like to pose a question regarding paint sealant to prep for the winter. In my arsenal, I have both Opti-Seal and Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant.

Which of these products should I use? Should they be layered together, or should I just do two layers of one? If so, in what order??

Also: Is Opti-Seal a decent product for windows? I have some WG Perfekt Vision already, but it seems to be meant for cleaning rather than beading off rain?
