Windshields...

I recently had a long discussion with a long-term professional window cleaner and learned a few things I`ve put into practice with success:
1. Use two towels. One should be a "mop" just to absorb the majority of cleaner and dirt, while the second one is just to finish and polish. His second towel is a thin, almost silky-feeling towel.
2. For your finishing passes, go slow with minimum pressure on the mf. Pressing hard and wiping fast defeats the absorptive qualities of the microfiber material.

I`ve put this into practice not only with glass, but when drying an entire car. "Slow down to get done faster" is working well for me.

Bill

After detailing cars for nearly 20 years, you figure this out by trial and error. I just got high quality glass specific MFs. The above advice can even be accomplished with high quality paper towels (Bounty is my favorite). Paper towels will always leave lint behind, higher quality leaves a lot less. Cheap paper towel is a nightmare to clean glass with.

After many years and trying many things, I`m *still* all about the Griot`s Polypropylene Window Wipes, which I use with a good Window Cleaner.

Though I use a Glass MF for the back inner windows of the Tahoe (with Zep40 for the daily dog-slobber cleanup).

Here`s a thread from 5 yrs ago: http://www.autopia.org/forums/car-detailing-product-discussion/168579-genuine-bar-water-blade.html

I`m still using this technique when I want the inside of the windshield perfect. I probably bother with it 1X per year. I`ve yet to find another method that comes even close to getting glass this clean. I no longer use standard MF towels "designed for glass"...they leave far too much nano-lint behind. I`m using that other type of towel (from The Rag Co.) that reminds me of a nice, silk napkin or your basic blue huck towel. Neither of these leave any evidence of lint.

(I have never tried it on a smoker`s car and don`t know what the result would be.)

Rsurfer- Thanks for the recommendation, always curious about the "newest best Glass Cleaner"! I`m a firm believer in how different Glass Cleaners give different results.

Though, heh heh...I won`t be restocking any Glass Cleaners (other than the Zep40, which I really go through and will *never* replace) for maybe five years or so...have *gallons and gallons* on-hand, and some of those are concentrates like the HD 50:1.

E.g., Bill D sent me some Meguiar`s Glass Cleaner (D120 IIRC) maybe five years ago, and it`s been gradually working its way to the front of the shelf, oughta get it in service in about two more years...if that gives you any idea of how much stuff I have to use up :o

Yeah, those work well for me too, though I got mine somewhere else. That`s what I use in the back of the Tahoe every day.

Three or four of my *OLD* Cobra MFs for Glass (the yellowish-orange ones from the `90s) are still working lint-free, but we use those on eyeglasses. The first one went bad last year, using that one for non-critical household glass now.

ShawnF350 turned me on to TowelPros green ribbed green MF towels for glass. Here`s an explanation on how to use them:

I also bought some of these: They work the same. Check out his "box" technique video also

Standard Green 16 x 16 Microfiber Glass and Window Towel | The Rag Company

The key here is to clean with one wet towel, then wipe dry with a dry towel, polishing the glass with that last towel. Has made my inside windshield cleaning very easy, and spotless.

Thanks again Shawn

I first use a steamer with the squeegee attachment, that helps remove the dirt and any other stuff that is on there. You figure with steam that is over 200 degrees that helps with removing the tuff stuff. Then I use dedicated glass cleaner.

Thanks for all the superb advice you guys. This is why this forum is so great. I will definitely be investing in some dedicated glass microfibers. No more streaky windshields for me.

Yeh, I hear that Accumulator`s "collection" makes an Amazon warehouse and distribution center look "small" by comparison!!

Yes, I would travel across the Midwest to attend his garage/yard/rummage sale if he ever decides to hold one. (As usual, no cameras, video recording equipment, or Smartphones allowed!!)
