Optimum Gloss Coat Questions

So my entry level coating I offer is Americoat, but I`m down to my last bottle. It`s been fine and when double coated, offers some decent protection, although not extraordinary. I`m switching to Optimum Gloss Coat for my entry level coating now. I used to offer Opti Coat (the Pro version) but then Optimum screwed with their pricing twice in a year and I got pissed off and left. I`m thinking of offering two different OGC packages: one coat and two. I saw the thread here where Yvan Lacroix says one coat is sufficient, but you`ll get much better durability and looks out of two.

Has anyone done two coats of OGC? Did it look better than one coat? Did it last really long?

For those of you who sell it in packages, do you offer a 2nd coat, and if so, how much extra do you charge for it? I`ve got to work out my pricing of where I`m going to price it at. What is your package price for wash, decon, one step polish + OGC?

Thanks!

I did my uncles 2010 Camaro with two coats. I can`t say if two coats is more durable than one since this was the first time I used gloss coat. Last I spoke with him he told me it was holding up fine as he washes it at home.

I can`t recall if it looked better after one coat. But it did look great afterwards. I did the second coat 1 hour after the first.

Here`s the thread on it if you wish to see how it looked.

2010 Camaro Optimum Gloss Coat New Formula

Now after listening to the optimum synergy podcast, Dr. G made a comment that one coat is sufficient and that is all that is needed. I forget what episode it is. It might be episode 6.

The longevity of it was increased from 2 years to 3 years.

I`ve always been a stickler for following manufacturers directions, and if Dr. G says one coat is enough; then that`s good enough for me.

I got one and a half years out of Gloss-Coat before I crashed my car and I was highly impressed with the performance for that time, and I washed my car at a much higher frequency than the average joe with APC enhanced shampoos.

:( Final Update On Optimum Gloss-Coat

I try to apply a "thick" single coat and haven`t had a single complaint yet*. The only times I`ve ever had high spots or streaking occur after applying a coating is with the second coat. Luckily they`ve all been on my personal helmets so I haven`t had to re-polish a panel.

*I had one customer say the beading on her Infiniti M35 was starting to flatten on her roof. After a quick wash and decon with FerreX, the beading was restored.

Come to find out, she had left it at an airport so there was plenty of contamination on the horizontal panels (roof, hood, trunk lid).

I`ve only applied it on a few cars but it`s always only been one coat for me. I have it priced at $300 on top of any paint correction.

I`m also thinking of adding Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light as a mid level coating at $400 on top of any correction. I`ve applied it to one car now and liked what I saw but plan to do some testing before I add it to my site.

Richy, I used OCP back in the day as well. For me the big thing with Opti or any other coating is actually getting proper coverage. For me this is
more of an issue shown when you look at the amount of product (oz/ml) being spread over the SqFt of paint minus the amount of "carrier" and then figure the "thickness / coverage". This math part of the topic has been played out a few times and one real sticking point is no Mgft. ever wants to come forwards and give our the chemicals and amounts to be abel to figure if these "thicknesses" are even doable with the amount of product given. So I say if I have enough product or it takes 2 coats to make sure you have proper and even coverage then thats what I do.

On my current car I used Gloss-Coat as the protection for the wheels. For just the 4 wheels I used an entire 10cc syringe of Gloss-Coat. It may be overkill or a waste of product; but for me it was worth the protection. So personally I think I would almost always use the 20cc tubes and use as much as needed to ensure coverage.

How does anyone coat a car with only 10cc of product?!?!?!?

Richy do you offer any other add-ons for your coating packages? I would think a glass coating would be an easy upsell.

Crystal Serum Light has been flying off the shelves with a lot of repeat orders. I like the idea of using it as a mid-level coating since it has a higher durability claim. And then it gives you the option for an EXO add-on upsell.

I have done several cars using a suede applicator. I can do about 2 mid size cars per tube. The second coat does seem to be a little glossier to my eye but i may be applying the coat too thin. I am going to use the foam applicator to see if i can get the same look out of one coat.

I should look at the Gtechniq stuff too. I brought in 3 tubes of the GC to try.

Troy, I always use much more product on wheels than I do the body too. I`m more interested in costing how many cc`s per car than worrying about running out on a job. I just want an accurate idea on cost.

Up sell on a coating? No. Other than DLux or Fly By Forte I guess. I`ll start reading up on the Crystal Serum Light. Someone sent me a Pro version of Crystal Serum to try, but I haven`t had a chance to do so yet.

Thanks. I`ll probably use the suede too. I liked using it with Opti Guard. Thanks for the info about the 2nd coat.

Well, Yvan is his Canadian distributor, and his thread right here on Autopia clearly discusses the benefit of a 2nd coat and when to do so. Yvan hasn`t steered me wrong yet.

I have only done the double coat and it was on a Subaru Legacy I own. Barely made it and did not have enough to do the wheels. Called optimum and they sent me like 3 ml to do my wheels and said I used too much. It works well but they really need to up the mls at that price to make it so you can do the whole car 2x and wheels.

That said the stuff works. Looks great and is the most durable coating I have used. More so Han Gyeon mhos, Exo, 22ple, Viking coat and backfire.

It`s perfect for someone normal wanting to enjoy their car and life with out the swirl worry.

Did you use the foam applicator? Seems like the amount used per vehicle is all over the board. I have a quad cab f250 coming up and have 20cc on hand. I think that should be enough but i am not really sure now.

I ordered the kit on AGO last week plus the Opti pro applicator - the yellow foam disc is a PITA in my opinion.

The Lake Country is my go to applicator for PBL coating, but the suede applicator block works better for syringe coatings. The foam absorbs too much product. You can reuse the Lake Country applicator after PBL. They suede ones are hard after other coating types and are ready for the trash.

The gtech Exo is as easy as anything. I`ve had it last 12-18 months perfectly and then it tails off. So hydropbic that I keep going back to it. It`s been on my jeep since new in April /may 2015 and still going strong. Jeep is outside 24x7. The detail is listed here if you search trail hawk. I can shoot you some recent pics if you pm me your email. My photo bucket stinks since they changed the interface and I can not longer get it to do what I want. It`s messed up my ability to post details and I need to figure it out or get a new host. Their CS blows. IMHO

Cancoat is another underated product. Works great last 6-12 months application is like a spray wax.

FWIW Yvan mentioned somewhere else that Gloss Coat is a mix of opti coat pro and sio2.

thats good enough for me.

Its like bottling a little bit of the lightening from Zeus!
