What billet BP is this?!?! Please let us know how it goes.

It's the "Beast" and "Katana" Plates by Kamikaze. Here are some initial pics I took as they arrived. I apologize for the way my 21 looks, I use and abuse it everyday!

Re: Review: Griot's Garage Boss 21 Long Throw Polisher - Comparison To Rupes 21ES

Hi jsou,

What's the benefit of these BPs? Is it the spacing to the shroud? Does it generate extra heat since there are no cooling holes in the BP?

Re: Review: Griot's Garage Boss 21 Long Throw Polisher - Comparison To Rupes 21ES

I plan to do a comparison/review between it and the Rupes 5" BP with KB Washer mod. Look out for that soon.

Cool! No doubt it will offer better correction.

I would expect it to translate a little more vibration without the cushion the stock plates have. I would also expect it to generate much more heat being metal, having no holes, and the fact that they used the J Hook style Velcro, which is known for generating more heat.

Definitely interest in hearing your finding though. Pick up an IR thermometer if you don't already have one. :)

Noting that I have *ZERO* familiarity/experience with these machines, isn't one notable feature the way the oblong spindle housing fits into the similarly-shaped recess in the back of the plate?

What's the difference in the beast and the katana? Imagine the beast with a Meguiar's Microfiber pad cutting ability . Can't wait for the review jsou!

Hi jsou,

In my initial testing, I noticed a very smooth and balanced polishing experience with this BP. Think 5" BP with KBM washer mod but on STEROIDS!

I haven't put a thermometer to the BP after a polishing session as Rasky suggested, but I do notice there is an increase in temperature vs the stock BP. (In my review, I will get in depth with this)

Mike Phillips has an article on why thinner pads are ideal for DAs somewhere. I believe this takes the same concept just at the backing plate level. The only potential drawback I see is it will probably not conform well on a vehicle's contours/curves. I haven't had an issue so far as I am also using their 3" BP conversion on my Duetto for those purposes.

I will tell you one thing, for those worried about "bogging" of the Rupes (I don't have this issue with the Rupes even on the stock BP)... I'm not claiming this BP will stop that "issue" for you but it makes the polisher even more easier to control and a lot less likely to "stall" for inexperienced users.

So far I am happy with this buy but I will need to draw up an in-depth review for you all after I put it through more corrections/abuse.

Back on topic. I apologize Marc, I didn't want to take away from your review!

Side note: That plate is NOT for beginners, one nick on a mirror with that and your toast, even with tape. I ordered one for the 21 :D

Wow, those BPs look really interesting. Good to see someone innovating something new.

The price is a bit steep though - $100. But, I guess innovation isn't free... Once someone rips off the idea, I'm sure the copies will be less.

Posts on the Kamikaze backing plates have been moved into a new, separate thread.

Carry on ladies and gentleman :)

My included back plate works just fine. Not looking to drop a c nite unless some can explain to me why it's worth it-to me.

I used these at the Esoteric open house awhile back. It was explained to me that the Japanese style of polishing is different than our. They run the Rupes at full speed in quick burst of correction. The plates are very balanced and I was surprised at how well they worked. I even "one handed" it with Kai's direction at one point just to prove it could be done running full speed. Because of how they are made there is no need for the washer mod as they easily clear the shroud. But yes $100 is very steep for this add on IMO.

Thanks Troy! I wanted to make it out to the open house but was so tied up with work that I wasn't able to make the drive. Your feedback is appreciated.

I spoke to Kai and he relayed the same information. Sure, the stock BP is fine and I don't believe anyone "needs" this. However, I can't leave things the way they are and love screwing with things... especially when performance gains are claimed.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts Driver.
