Zymol Questions

Hey everybody,

I recently picked up some Zymol Concours and Carbon waxes (only because the girl at the register messed up and sold it to me for $34 apiece! :spot ) I'm curious who has used it and what their opinions of it are. When I rubbed my finger across the wax it quickly melted and was VERY slick. I don't buy their claims of having over 30% caranuba in the wax, but it seems like some nice stuff. Also, on the tubs they say to refridgerate after opening....wth is that about?

Thanks in advance,

-Zach

I actually found it over at the new indoor electric go-kart place in St. Charles. Grand Prix Speedways. They carry most of the Zymol line and for V-Day they have a 35% off Zymol promotion. I picked up my Carbon wax there and brought up a tub of the Concours just to check the price. The girl assumed it was the Creme wax, so i got both for 35% off of $50 per tub!

Also FWIW, this wax will be going on my Corvette and M3. Both of which have a LOT of metallic and depth to their dark-hued paint.

Also, is it really recommended to warm the wax in my hands to melt it? Will it really make that much of a difference compared to just applying it with a MF or foam applicator pad?

Nice find. I like Concours but it just does not do well in the heat. Couple of hot days and a few rain showers and the stuff washes away. The stuff smells so good its hard not to eat it.

Hmm...we definitely get hot and humid summers in St. Louis. Maybe this will be a spring/fall wax for me, haha. Any particular method that you use to apply it yakky?

Do a little research here on the forums, it's discussed quite a bit. Short version: yes you apply it directly with your hands. You also need to prep the paint with Zymol HD-Cleanse or an equivalent product.

Found a few threads on the HD-Cleanse. Looks like it will be worth the price to ensure the perfect finish. However, what if I want to lay Zymol over the top of FMJ? Will it stick to FMJ like other waxes or no?

I live in New England where we have freezing, salty winters and hot, humid summers. Typically, I get 4-6 weeks durability out of my Zymol which IMO is plenty. It may even last longer, but I've never gone longer without applying another layer. Typically, I put two layers on a week apart during the early spring and then just add one layer per month through the fall.

Using the HD-Cleanse prior to your first application of Zymol really does seem to make a better finish. It ends up significantly slicker than if you use a different pre-cleaner instead of HD Cleanse.

I've also experimented with putting sealants like FMJ and Wolfgang under my Zymol. Personally, I didn't like it at all. What really sets Zymol apart is the clarity, sharpness, and color acurracy of the reflections. Plus, it makes a super wet looking finish. Putting the sealant underneath took a lot of these great qualities away.

Thanks for the information Mikeyc! I'm having trouble finding more detailed information about the apply directly by hand method. Any insight?

The reason for refrigeration after opening,is to ensure the product is fresh when you use it,and to prolong the products shelf life.Any natural product should be stored in a cool place, away from strong sunlight.

I find when trying to apply EG Zymols with a foam pad the wax comes out of the jar kind of chunky. I suppose you could get the chunks to melt down by applying the wax with some vigor and a lot of working it in. Personally though I don't like to rub anything on my paint vigorously. Rubbing = friction and friction = scratches over time. When you apply it with your hands it melts immediately though and is very easy to apply.

Just put a little in your palm and rub your palms together until the wax liquifies. Then just spread it over the paint with your hands. No pressure is needed to transfer the wax from your skin to the paint. Remember two things . . .

1. Like any wax/sealant apply it thinly

2. Wash your hands first and then again when you're done

Personally, I like the bare handed application because it gives me a great idea of the condition of the paint.

Zach, just wanted to say thanks for the heads-up on the sale. I just ran up there this afternoon and they had one Concours left. It didn't have a price tag on it, unlike the Carbon, Japon and Titanium next to it, so I just asked the girl how much it cost. She looked in the computer for awhile, looked at the other stuff on the shelf, then charged me $34.

I was just intending to buy the Carbon, but I couldn't pass this up for the price and I really can't justify buying both. After all, I just bought some Zymol Z3 from another member here and between the two jars it should last me for quite awhile.

Shame they didn't have anymore HD-Cleanse left, I would have bought a couple. Also, they were out of the little 2-oz Destiny or I would have snagged that as well. They just had the sign on the shelf.

Where did you buy concours for $34? I would be very curious to know. Concours does not sell any cheaper than 160 dollars, and you will not find that brand otc, unless someone has bought a lot of them and decided to display it for sale.

If you can get more of it, it may be wise to stock up on it. As far as the carnauba content, you really won't get an answer as to the validity of its ingredients on a message board. Zymol stands by their claims, and in fact, they are one of the (very) few wax makers that will tell you the contents of their wax. You would need to have the wax analyzed if you are not convinced of its contents.

It is good to refrigerate the wax, but I have not found that to be a required step IMO. I have used EGZymols for several years, and I would not substitute any other product for it on my car. You will ultimately have to determine whether it lived up to its claim by using it and comparing it to the product that you used before it, as well as a few other carnauba products in the market. Only you can decide for yourself if the Zymols exceeded your expectations.

To those who are asking how i got it for $34, its due to the fact that the sales ladies are stupid. The place im referring to has a 35% off Zymol products for V-Day. The concours on the shelf had no pricetag on it and isn't in the system. Therefore the ladies assumed (with some convincing from me) that it's the same as Carbon/Japon/Creme and charged me $34 (MSRP - 35%). IIRC, they have some Zymol in a wooden box in the bottom of a display shelf. Wonder if i can get them to say thats worth $34 too, haha!

I will definitely stock up on HD-Cleanse and another tub of Concours if they do get more in before V-Day.

I've had no durability problems with Zymol over the Australian summer & we've had plenty of days over 120 degrees & some heavy storms.

Well, I do appreciate you leaving one jar of Concours for me. All I did was ask the cashier how much it cost and let her decide for herself how much to charge after she researched it for several minutes. It's interesting that the Zymol stuff that does have price tags is marked higher than on Zymol's own website.
