ZAIO all by itself

Hey, guys. I have a quick hypothetical to pose. If you only had the time to wash, clay and apply ZAIO, how do you think the ZAIO would hold up as your LSP. I know that people typically apply Z2 and/orZ5, but how does ZAIO stack up when used by itself?

Speaking from experience. I used to get about 2 months on average out of my ZAIO by itself. During the harsher winter months I would get a little less. 4-6 weeks before I would start losing the beading. That's just my personal experience on Subaru paint and Honda Paint.

I got 3 months on my beater when it was garaged at night and at the airport 40-50 hours a week for work. This was Z7 washes only, no Z6 or Z8.

Ahhh...one of the guys I was hoping that would respond to this thread. Thanks, Bryan. I did my buddies new A5 over the weekend, and I only had time to use ZAIO via the PC. I'll probably be washing it again in the next few weeks, so I'll wash it with Z7, then Z6 and finally a couple of layers with Z5. It was my first time using Zaino, and I wanted to make sure he was going to be protected for a few weeks with just the ZAIO.

I really appreciate you chiming in!!! :up

Glad I could help. Please let us know your results.

I think ZAIO by itself is more durable than 90% of waxes out there, and it has a very wet look. I'd same the same about KAIO. For a long time I've only been using CS over ZAIO and I've been getting incredible durability. I wonder if the durability is coming more from the ZAIO than the CS.:nixweiss

Wow! Thanks for all of the input, guys. Being a Zaino rookie, I just wanted to make sure I didn't short change my friend. I couldn't believe how good the ZAIO looked all by itself. And Fbody, I almost did the Z8 wipedown afterwards, but again, I was running out of time.

Here is something else I observed and maybe you guys could elaborate on it. My buddies A5 was FILTHY. He's been only spraying it off because I told him not to take it through a tunnel wash or let the dealership detail it when it's in for service, so this thing was beyond dirty. I did a very thorough pressure washing to remove as much grime as possible. Then I soaked the car with P21S TAW, and washed using a grout sponge. I then pressure washed it yet again. I then clayed the car, and finally washed it again using Z7 and a sheepskin mitt. I applied the ZAIO via my PC and a white 4" CCS pad. Halfway through the car, the white pad was filthy (dark grey in color). Was this the ZAIO removing even more grime? How is that possible with my washing process????

A couple of reasons. One is the white pad and PC are going to clean more aggressively than your hand wash and clay (white pad = polish). The second reason is ZAIO has "an emulsifying cleaner and very mild abrasive."

What you want to do now Casey is a comparison between the ZAIO and your 5 gallon tub of of KAIO :chuckle:

That's basically what I thought, John. Thanks for confirming. I just couldn't believe how dirty the pad had gotten....

Damn it, John! Hahaha....So I was a little overzealous when I started out and I ordered five liters of KAIO. I'm planning on living until I'm 174 years old, so I thought that should hold me over. :woot2:

EisenHulk- I'll be interested to hear how the ZAIO lasts on the A5. I've only experimented with it a *little* bit (thanks to BlkZ28Conv for the sample!) but I found it to be more different from KAIO than I'd expected.

The ZAIO had considerably more aggressive abrasives, it even seemed more abrasive on some surfaces/materials than my old 3M PI-III MG 05937, and in fact the ZAIO hazed up the black plastic portions of the A8's sideview mirrors (took a few rounds with various polishes to bring 'em back). That might explain part of how it cleaned up the paint so well; sorta like the way Meguiar's calls abrasives "cleaners" because they *do* scrub the paint clean in a manner of speaking.

(Next time you have something really dirty, you might try AutoInt/ValuGard's "A" or FK's 1119 instead of the TAW, sorta surprising how some grime stays put despite seemingly good washing.)

The ZAIO did last longer than the KAIO, but only a little bit.. a few weeks after a long roadtrip both were dead (less than slick, not beading well) so I can't say that either of them lasts longer than (most of) the waxes I use. I'm kinda  how some people get it to last so long.

Thanks for the input, Accumulator. The dirty pad REALLY caught me off guard.

I just acquired the first two steps of the FK Decon system, and I probably should've used it. Again, time was a factor here, so maybe next time I'll go back and use it.

I'll also be interested in your take on *those* products :D

If working on Audis, just be a *little* careful with the acidic stuff on the (aluminum) exterior brightwork. If the clear anodizing/powdercoating/whatever-it-really-is were to be compromised (perhaps even just microscopically), I dunno who well the underlying aluminum would respond to the acid.

I used "B" on the (then brand-new) S8 without any problems, but I just use the first step on used Audis.

Thank you for the FYI. I'll be absolutely sure to keep that in mind.

I appreciate that.

Do you guys think DG105 would work well over ZAIO (after 24 hrs cure time) as an LSP or would the 105 remove the ZAIO?
