Zaino Z-5(pictures!)

I had a 1997 BMW 528i to detail last Tuesday, didn't get enough time to do the GMC Tahoe (but most likely next Thursday.)

The car has 50K on it. It hasn't been detailed in a year (the last time I detailed it actually, last summer!, over a year!.) I put on Klasse AIO followed by Souveran by hand. (ok, this was last summer, sorry for the confusion.)

I tried for an hour on the hood with PC, lambswool pad, and clear coat compound to get the swirls out, wasn't too successful, so I told the owner that I can not remove them with this machine, and I didn't have a rotary, so he agreed to live with them. I was doing this detail as a favor, not business so he didn't mind.

(I clayed with Clay Magic before Z'ing, worked out well, paint was buttery smooth.)

So I dawn washed and starting mixing Z-5 with ZFX (1 ounce of Z5 with 5 drops ZFX.)

I applied on 3 coats of Z-5 with ZFX with Z-6 inbetween.

I vacuumed out the interior, dressed everything, buffed the wood trim, removed stains, clean and treated the leather, and wiped down the engine,

Here are some befores

Klasse is still on there, the water just sheet/beaded, something was on there. Well the car is mostly garaged and rarely taken out in inclimate weather.

The Zaino Z-5 with ZFX worked well. The swirls weren't helped much, but I didn't expect much. The owner was happy. The car looked like so different than before with Klasse/Souveran. The color was actually lighter and the metallic showed up a little. 8-10 minutes to apply. 10 minutes to buff with 30 minutes of dry time. Then 5 minutes to Z-6.

Buffing off was pretty easy, a little harder than Souveran but easier than Blitz.

It took me 7 hours to detail this car, 1 hour to wash the wheels, vac, clean wheels, tires and wheelwells/clay. 1 hour on swirls, 4 hours on Zaino and cleaning out interior/dressing/cleaning conditioning leather, dressing tires, and polishing up the head/tail lights wth Z-14. Finally one hour on the final details, dressing wheel wells, cleaning windows......

I'll try to go back and see the car next Thursday and maybe wash it with Z-7 and add more coats of Z.

Tell us what else you did before using Zaino. Did you level? Cause I'd like to see how the paint looks in sunlight?

Ryan

Ryan,

I clayed the whole car, turned it from blue to brown.

I tried polishing out the swirls with the PC with lambswool pad and clear coat compound, removed about 1/2 the swirls, but took too long (estimated 4-5 hours on car with PC and compound, just didn't have the time.)

I'll try to get pictures in sunlight next week. Started and finished while sun was rising/sun setting. Was working on it in the garage while sun was over head (forgot to bring suntan lotion.)

Jason

PS, I'll try to take out the swirls completely when I get trained with the proper use of a rotary, this will be within 3 years, and when I get an ETG gauge.

Wow... just amazing Jason! The wheels/tires look so clean and the paint looks blemish-free... and so reflective too!

Great job!

Looking perfect, Jason.

I have a question though.

You said, you couldn't get rid of the swirls with the PC. Do I get it right ; there are swirls which one can't eliminate with a PC ?

I'm about to get a random orbital and trying to understand what a PC can do and can't.

Thanks for the pictures.

The PC can only do so much. It can take a good finish and make it an excellent one with practice.

I believe a rotary was used on this BMW. I heard a dealer applied wax by machine. On the front door panel in the correct angle in direct sunlight there are tell tale signs of rotary usage by an inexperienced person, or someone in a rush.

A PC can not remove these, only a rotary can. I'll get pictures next time I stop by (maybe Thursday, could be next summer, this guy is hard to find and off on business 1/2 of the time I hear from him.)

Plus the countless brush washes this car has been through in its 6 year life span.

Thanks everyone for the comments, yep Brad, wheels were a PIA, took me about 5-8 minutes per wheel and 12 ounces of Ef Hi full strength with a soft wheel brush, a spoke brush, a terry cloth piece to scrub the areas the brush can't get to, and a tire brush.

Oh, I give a thumbs up to EO Wet tire spray, picked up a bottle for like $4. I applied with a EO tire swipe and used about 1/4-1/2 an ounce for the 4 tires. Then came back around and gave them a quick swipe without spraying the swipe with any dressing. LEft a nice sheen on them with a dry feeling. So I know what to use on these tires now! (Used Meguiar's Endurance, Lexol Vinylex, and Meguiar's High Gloss before, Vinylex performed the best out of the bunch, now its EO.)

Jason

Jason,

You mean marks like these?

These were successfully removed with a PC . . . :nixweiss Are you saying that no amount of work with a PC can get out certain swirls, or just that it can take multiple applications and lots of work with a PC for deeper marks?

Tort

Kudos, Jason. As an ex-owner of a BMW with those exact same wheels, I completely understand the pain associated with cleaning those bastids...

Great work, as always! :up
