Zaino vs. Custom Black GMC

This morning I had to pleasure to detail a 2007 Black GMC Truck.

The owner picked it up last Fall and has done several tasteful mod’s to the truck: De badged, Wheels, Tires, Exhaust, and a few performance upgrades to the engine.

He cleaned, painted, and cleared ALL exposed pieces in the undercarriage. It was something to see. I didn’t have to do a thing to the wells, because they weren’t much more than dusty.

The owner was concerned about the dealer installed swirl marks, and overall condition of the paint. It sounded *bad* over the phone but when it showed up, I knew this one was going to be a challenge because he wanted it *perfect*. The truck had light/moderate swirls, and a few spots had rotary holograms from the debadging process. Nothing crazy.

The owner was also interested in an update on detailing products, process, etc…. He brought along a vintage Black and Decker Rotary (built like a tank), a collection of wool pads, and a few 3M body shop product. We left these safely stored in the bed of the truck

I borrowed my neighbors PC for the owner, and we both ‘plugged in’ and we went to town.

This one took both of us ~ 5 hours, and I’d say we corrected 90% of the defects, all of which were light/moderate (nothing crazy).

Here’s a re-cap of the process we used:

Wash

Foam gun & Z7 wash

Z16 on the tires & bumper pads

Polish

PC @ 5 using LC CCS green light cutting pads, and Z-PC

PC @ 5 using LC CCS red finishing pads, and ZAIO

Protection/LSP on the Bed, Wheels, and Paint

Bed Cover:

Z6 Wipe down

CS

Turned out really nice! :)

Just FYI, ZPC also works well via orange Edge pads (Cyclo version) if you need a little more cut. On harder paints, it finishes nearly LSP ready.

Looks great John. Very nice reflections you got there.

ZPC is one amazing polish. I noticed on my last couple details it feels like I am missing something when I look at my pics. It's the zpc glow that I am missing. Well from now on I am finishing off with zpc. Looking at your pics I realized this.

 Honestly, how can you tell that just from the pictures? To me, ZAIO has more of a 'look' than ZPC but I don't think I could notice the absence of one or the other from just pictures.

HAHA. I know it does sound strange Scott, but in person I can even tell. So I did a just full prep and I used po85rd on the whole car and then had to wash all the dust off. I then dried and used zpc just on the hood and drivers fender. Well today I noticed the zpc looked like a hard shell with tons of reflection and looked very crisp and po85 looked intense but more muted.

People who say Zaino isn't good on Black are FOOLS! Looks as good as any product out there and better than most, very nice work. I do use a wax once in while becasue i think it's easier, but dang Zaino looks good, especially when you top it with CS which is the wettest product I've tried.

This is true, but don't discount the fact that this detail only came out so good because of the attention to detail, and proper prep work. A good detail is only as good as it's prep. I don't care what lsp you use, if you don't put the effort and time into the correct technique and polishing steps, it won't look good. This one turned out magnificent, but look at the hours spent by two people to do it. They definitely put both effort and time, and it shows. Nice work!!

so true! Prep is where it all begins.

John always pulls it off and does amazing prep work.

Guys, Thanks for the nice compliments. The owner did a great job with the PC -I'll have to send him this link. He'll get a kick out of it.

Rydawg: I think the majority of the gloss comes from Z-PC, but to my eyes ZAIO does boost the look, and works great as a finishing polish. I'm not sure if I'd be able to capture the improvement on camera (side-by-side Z-PC vs. Z-PC & ZAIO), but in person I can tell. I pour Z-PC and ZAIO in a 1 oz squeeze bottles, which reminds me that a few dabs is all it takes. My Menzerna collection has been collecting dust, and I never thought I'd say that.

Scottwax: Thanks for the tip on the Edge cyclo pads. I'll have to give that a shot. The orange LC pads are a bit stiff and require another pass (at least for me). I have very good luck with the green LC Hi-Gloss and CCS pads on GM black paint.

JDookie: Thank you, and well said. Prep, especially on black, is the key to a great looking finish. The LSP is there to preserve our hard work and keep the finish looking like new.

Man that look good...

Home come these GMC Subur' stil making drum brakes in the back

klnyc: Thank You.

gmblack3a: I'm looking forward to seeing the results of your current project, and hearing about your new Metabo :buffing:
