Zaino to OTC comparison

The first few photos are from a previous Click & Brag where the process was PB2.5, FPII, Zaino Z5 x2, Zaino Z2pro, with Z6 in between coats and Z8 as the finisher.

I decided to experiment and try some new (to me) products on the Protege with the goal of increasing depth and the pop from the silver flake. I was NOT displeased with Zaino and I intend to continue to use it on my wife's minivan where its beauty and longevity are key.

My process was to remove the Zaino using Klasse AIO and a green LC pad (dual purpose cutting/polishing) running at 4.5. on the PC. After removing haze with a microfiber towel I applied Mother's Reflections Advanced Wax with a blue Propel 2 pad (polishing) at a speed of 3. I chose Mother's Reflections based on some posts by AlexRuiz which described Reflections as bringing out the pop in the metal flake (not a direct quote :) ). Finally I applied Collinite 845 using a LC black pad (finishing) at 3. I was pleased at the ease of application of all three of the above products. The results:

I think I got a little more depth with maybe a little loss in reflectivity. The surprise for me was the huge increase in pop with the metalflake.

I can't recall ever seeing this in the 6 years I've owned this vehicle.

Don't worry, you'll hear that you somehow applied Zaino wrong in your first set of pictures as a result of not seeing the flake pop like you saw with the OTC method :lol



Regardless, the paint looks great :xyxthumbs Keep us posted on the Collinite longevity.



Like Alex Ruiz says, he has a tough time with all his experiments, finding a boutique line that competes with the look of the new Mother's lineup even in the category of durability.

Just goes to show how good the OTC products have become. :)



I think as long as you properly prep the car, the LSP you use may only have a 10% or so range to tweak the final look.
 
Zaino is a great product. I've seen some sick looking cars here with it applied (Zaneo, blkZ28Conv, etc...). I was merely stating that the some of the irrational Zaino freakazoids will buckle at the knees if they read that another product somehow performed better for you in the look you were trying to achieve. I'm basing it on posts I have read that will question your prep, application, blah, blah, blah because there is no way, in their mind, that your results can be true.



That's all. I'm not questioning the product.

Congrats, your car looks great! IMHO the new Mothers lines are absolutely top appearance-wise. However, I'd put the Collinite on first to ensure durability and then the Mothers for pure look (and of course Top Coat, layered ×3).

Luckily, the 845 not too sensitive to which base you put it on, but the less durable stuff can compromise the top layer. Tip: the Top Coat works excellent over 845.



I put a coat of Mothers Reflections Spray Wax on my car 3 or 4 days ago, just to see the behavior of the product in cold (-17°C). I must say that both the application and appearance is fantastic. Of course I moved the car into a garage to apply the wax, and not let it to freeze. The results are awesome! And yes, I have Zaino too...

As much as I like Reflections I find that Zaino looks better overall (more clarity and wetter) and lasts longer. Just based on my own garage tests.
 
Lee, in my eyes, the Reflections has more wetness and a thicker, more rounded look. I can not argue about the clarity, however I usually apply Reflections over Optimum polish which produces a very clear looking surface as well.



Recently I did a very un-scientific subjective test with Z2 Pro and FK #425 and I saw a slight advantage (100:98.5) for the 425 while the Z2 Pro was even slicker. But as the FK products work, the second day their slickness was equal, and from the third day 425 took over. Z is new for me so I need to test it more, but I don't see any appearance advantages over FK1 2180/Pink/425. And the FK1 sealants are at least as durable, if not more.



But my final verdict is that the Mothers Reflections simply looks killer on top of anything. Excellent product.

Sludge, your car looks great. I can't tell much difference between the two pics, but dare I say the OTC hood pic looks wetter?



I'm still running a comparison on my wheel covers where I applied AIO/WGx2 to two of them (one front, one rear), and Z5 to the other two. They are both holding up well, though the Zaino seems to be holding up a bit better. But as far as looks, there is no difference. If I posted pics of the car, nobody would be able to tell which side has the Zaino and which side has AIO/WG.

The only "prep" difference between the two sets of pictures is the use of Klasse AIO to remove the Zaino. I like the AIO/Mother's/Collonite combination for the much improved metal flake pop. Depth and reflectivity are open to debate even in person. Naturally my 2 megapixel camera does not capture all. Unfortunately I really don't know which of the three products I used was responsible for the increased "pop". Thats what happens when you introduce three new variables at once.

I think most of the "wetter" is due to variations in light. Silver cars are hard to photograph!

:D , yeah the voting was unanimous last time I checked. Another 6-8 weeks of letting those beautiful wheels sit in the closet. :(

Did you polish your exhaust tip or engine bay yet?

Sorry Sean, I have to disagree. Not on this particular car, but just in general. Prep two identical cars the same exact way and use Z2 Pro on one and Natty's Blue on the other and there will be a noticable difference. Not huge but it will be noticable. Whichever look you prefer is up to you. :)

I don't think there is any judgement to pass. I did not start this thread with an ax to grind. I was bored, the weather was warm, and I have seen several vehicles that Scottwax had done with Collinite 845. Like most silver car owners I was trying to see if I could increase the depth of my shine. I don't think the Collinite shine is much deeper than the Z2Pro with Z8 added. However the metallic flake pop is amazing! This may be due to the Klasse AIO that I had not previously used on this vehicle. I may try Zaino on top of Klasse AIO in a few months to see. As far as the "poor pictures" thank God my career in the Army removed my feelings or they would be deeply hurt! :LOLOL
