Zaino Or Liquid Glass

Hey guys. I'm a member at f150online and f150world and saw a link to over here, so i have a few questions for you guys. I have used Liquid Glass on my Black 2000 Harley Edition F150 since i bought it, and love the shine and reflection, but i've heard alot of stuff about Zaino too. I was thinking about giving Z a try, but if its not worth it, i don't want to spend 120 bucks for the whole kit of stuff. Please post what you think about the two. Pros/cons etc. I especially want to hear from people who have used LG AND Z and moreso if it was on a black vehicle. Thanks alot for any help.

O yeah, my truck is a daily driver (10K miles a year) and i don't have a garage or carport for it either, but i put the truck in alot of shows during the summer. Thanks again

I've used both - switched from LG to Z. I find Z to look a little bit better, last a lot longer, and not leave the infamous LG white residue on trim. On the other hand, I think LG was easier to apply/remove (more forgiving - but that's just me, I'm sure you'll hear differing opinions), cheaper, and looked almost as good - but only for ~2 weeks.

Oh yeah, I've never used LG on my black car - only on metallic colors...

Some stuff I see on f150online about car care is just bad. There is some stuff over there that is awesome also.

You won't need every Zaino product to wax your truck. Only Z-1/ZFX, Z-5, Z-2, and z-6&7 if you want to go all out. Only get Z-5 if you have small swirls. That should do for the body work.

For the other stuff (tires ect) I use the store stuff. It's cheaper, and I use the stuff very often, so it alays shine, and durability is never a factor.

for a black vehicle, the basic "Zaino Kit" you will likely need (especially on a daily driver, no cover vehicle) is the following:

ZFX

Z5

Z6

Z7

Total cost for all of this:

$61.75 to your door (possibly cheaper if you have a local distributor)

I find the Zaino to be MUCH more reflective, much more durable, and all around much better than LG. (This is on a dark green metallic vehicle - had LG on it when I bought the truck)

You really won't see that big of a difference between the Z5 and Z2, thus I only recommend for a black vehicle that you get the Z5, so you can take advantage of the swirl hiding characteristics of the polish/sealant. For application I find that ZFX is best to work with, and you will definitely want Z6 and Z7 for maintainance, it is the best way to ensure the truck is properly cared for under the Z system.

Try it, you'll love it. :wavey

Thanks for the quick response guys. I don't really care if one is more work than the other. I spend around 20 hours getting the truck ready for shows anyway, so one or 2 more hours for zainoing after the initial process is no big deal. I do like the fact that the Z won't leave the white stuff on the trim, cuz with the LG i have to use the peanut butter every time. In the end, i think it will all even out with the work.

samiam513, i know what you mean about some stuff at f150online. I make sure i thoroughly research stuff before i go doing something, and usually don't trust something that a new member that i don't know says until they build up a good reputation. But there is ALOT of great info and people over there also. I think i have like 1,400 some posts over there in about 9 months. :shocked LoL

For the zaino stuff, i want to get the zfx so i can do 3 coats in a day. I'm getting the z7, z6, z2 and z5 cuz the truck is 2 years old, so i figure it won't hurt. I also heard that i can use any clay bar, but they are all about the same price, so i figure i'll just stick with the z claybar. Also, i've had a really hard time finding a good tire shine that won't spin off, collect dirt, brown, wash off, be oily, etc. I've also heard great stuff about z16, so i want to try it. A guy over at f150world with a 02 HD did his bedmat and it turned out great. So thats why i want to try that.

Any body try their leather stuff?

Keep the responses and opinions coming, and any reasons i should/should not switch....Thanks

I agree with what SLD said. I recently went the Zaino rout on my red truck and bought exactly the products SLD listed.

The ZFX is great because it allows you to put several coats of protection on in 1 day.

The Z5 sealant supposedly looks better on dark paint.

The Z6 QD REALLY DOES make a difference in the depth and shine.

The Z7 wash... well, I dunno. I bought it but I'm not 100% sure it makes the Zaino more reflective or shinier (but my truck's not black).

I would also recommend some sort of paint cleaning before you apply the Zaino. At least clay, and preferrably something a little stronger since your truck sits outside and is a year or two old. Paint prep is EVERYTHING if you want any polish, sealant, or wax to look it's best!

I've had Zaino on my truck for about 4 weeks now, and the protection is awesome. Everything just washes right off.

Also, I'm just wondering: do all of the Harley F150's have the supercharger? Seems like I heard they did, but I'm not sure. Youre truck really looks great!

thats the only leather treatment I use anymore..... infact, its the only interior dressing I use - it works great even on the vinyl/plastic parts on the door handles, dash, etc..... great stuff, leaves that "factory new look" shine..... :up

BTW - I really envy you - those harley trucks are exactly what I want to get when replacing time comes for my current ride (98 chevy blazer)

Thanks for the compliments guys. To answer your question Dave N, no all HD's aren't supercharged. The 2000's (what i have) were all extended cab, flaresides, with only 3 options (6disc, rear slider window, block heater), and was the 1st year for the HD series, so they will be worth the most in the future. They only made 8197 of them in 00, 7000 something in 01, and 12,000 in 02. All the HD's are all leather though, come with the chrome 20's, and come with the 5.4L torque monster engine. LoL. :D A friend of mine has a lightly modded (chip/filter) 01 HD (01's were all crew cabs) and he raced an cadallic escalade ext (345 hp) and beat him. He said teh caddy had a bad launch, but still counts. LoL. The 2002' HD's are ALL supercharged crew cabs (the only year with factory supercharged HD's), and is the 1st year to offer another color other than black. The new color is dark shadow gray, but they also come in black. So if you see a crew cab rollin on dubs and it has a flame pinstripe, i woundn't mess with it. They run low 14's stock and just a chip/filter/pulley mod puts it in the mid-low 13's. Oh, and if you can get x-plan or just work a deal, you can get a 02 HD for around 33 grand!

Thanks again for the help, keep the opinons going.

2 more questions though.

-Should i use a foam applicator instead of the Z applicator?

-For the 1st time applying Z, I am going to wash with dawn, claybar, wash with z7, and then should i apply z5 and then z6 and continue with the coats? or should i apply z6 then z5 and z6 again and continue. I'm finding mixed answers on this one. Thanks

Sal Z seems to say no to the Z6 before the first Z5 coat..... I disagree though.... personally I've gotten better bonding results and higher gloss by doing Z6 Z5 Z6 than just Z5 Z6.

(this probably will start another argument, but what the hey...)

Just because I feel like typing, I have 4 coats of Z5 on my truck. The first two coats looked fine, but starting with the 3rd coat it started showing what I really wanted to see. My truck is charcoal grey metallic.

I have one coat of Z5 and 2 coats of Z2 on my wifes minivan (dark red), but I'm still not as happy with it. I might try another coat or two of Z5 to see if thats what I'm after, or maybe it just needs a couple more coats to show off.

I use a foam applicator, I was able to apply quicker and easier with it, and didn't seem to waste as much product getting soaked up in the applicator.

yeah, i think i'll get some of those foam applicators.

Anyway, i went out to the shed to see what kind of applicators i was using for the LG, (it was those rectangle foam wrapped in cotton) and on the bag is says 100% cotton. And it also says "made in USA" on the bag. But when i took out the used ones to pull out the botom one that was never used, it has a little sticker on it that says "made in mexico" I was like WTF???   LoL, i never noticed that before. The bag says usa, but the pad says mexico. LoL, i'll have to send it to jay leno. LoL

keep the responses coming. thanks

harley#356,

Yep, make sure your towels, mitts, applicators (if cotton) are 100% made in USA cotton. Go with Cannon white Charisma towels if you can get them. They are ideal for removing the Zaino. If you can get them with the edges "surged", so much the better! Otherwise cut the decorative band, and the edges off!

Good Luck! See ya back at FTW!

LG is a good product, but IMO, not up to Zaino standards. I've used LG on and off on other cars, because it does give about 80% of the Z shine, but only a third of the durability. I imagine this is because LG is silicone-based. Silicone and polymers just don't mix IMHO. The silicone prohibits any actual polymers bonding to the paint and offers less durability by its very nature in detailing products. I'm not trying to say LG is BAD. In fact, if Z and Klasse weren't around I'd probably use it more often on my personal car(s). It's just that there are superior products. Plus it can't layer like Z to give you a wetter, deeper shine and more protection. But, if anyone is looking to enter the world of polymer-based polishes, LG is a good place to start, especially since you can find it locally for $20.

If you decide on Z, the basics to get you going would be: Z1, Z5, Z6, and Z7. After you find that you love the Z products, you'll want the rest, trust me. ;)

For Z application, I use Viking foams and the best towels, Polo and Noble Choice, for buffing and Z6ing. After using the Fieldcrest for years, they seem average at best compared to a Polo or NC towel. In fact, since using these towels, my car is 99% swirl free now. Never could quite get there with Fieldcrest, and I see why now...

Happy Detailing!

:wavey

Metallic Mike,

Not to jump in on Harley#356's thread, but a quick question on the towels. Are the Polo and Noble Choice towels similar to the Cannon Charismas? Where do you get them?

I have to agree on the Field Crest's! They are a pretty good towel, but not in the same class as the Charismas!

Thanks

White_F150,

Actually, I was referring to the Fieldcrest Charismas and Royal Velvets that I've used over the years. The Polo and NC towels are quite simply a better towel at least in my experience. I thought nothing could be better than a Charisma, as far as 100% cotton goes, but it never hurts to try. I got my Polos etc...at a local mall, Dillards to be exact.

Here's a couple links to the kind I got: http://www.dillards.com/cgi-bin/nco...1058&prmenbr=301&cpcgnbr=917&startrow=1&mode=

http://www.polo.com/home/bath/item.asp?haid=1373&productid=3453&pagetype=bath

Both of these towels are sooo soft and plush, to my fingers it made the Fieldcrests feel like sandpaper, which is probably partly the reason they caused light marring. I'm extremely anal about towels though, even before I purchase them! I spend about an hour, when choosing new towels, stroking and comparing the textures of various brands. Ultimately, the softest, most plush towel will end up in my bag. Of course, if I'm not 100% certain they are 100% cotton, I don't even give them a second look. But, I've also felt towels from these same stores that claim to be 100% cotton that literally DO feel llike sandpaper. Whenever you're out buying items like this, just take a few extra minutes, at least, to compare brands and textures, because it will make a difference if you know what to look for! My "premium" Fieldcrests are now collecting dust at the bottom of my storage container, oh well, live and learn....

HTH!!!

:wavey

Again thanks for the opinions and help. I'll get some cannon towells if i do the zaino treatment. I'll also get zfx instead of z1 so i can do 3 coats in a day. Anyway, if i do decide on teh zaino, i'm going to get:

z2

z5

z6

z7

z16

z18

zfx

foam pads (viking if i can find them)

cannon towells

2 100% cotton wash mits (any brand suggestions?)

and maybe eventually some z9 and z10

If i'm going to do it, why not do it right. Don't feel like paying shipping twice either

more opinions on LG and Z will be appreciated :up

Your plan sounds good.:xyxthumbs

Trust me, you won't be disappointed. After the third coat, I decided that this was the best system out there(IMHO:D ).

Just be sure to Z6 in between EACH coat! It really does add depth and gloss!

I have about 10 coats(mixed Z2/Z5/Zfx) right now and I don't think my car could look any better! Just be sure to have Z2 as your final layer, because it's more optically perfect and is more reflective, IMO, than Z5.

Good luck!

:wavey

harley#356,

If you think you are going to stick with the Zaino system for a while, I would advise that you get a couple (or few) of the Z6 QD, and the Z7 car wash. You will go through these pretty quickly, if you wash and polish frequently.

Metallic Mike,

Thanks for the tip on the towels, I'm going to have a look around for some. :xyxthumbs

Hey Harley356

When do you find the time to detail your truck when you spend all your time on these message boards. Just kidding with ya.

Go ahead, step up to the plate and try the Zaino. You'll love it

Tell me more about the peanut butter trick on the plastic. How to apply, how often, any tricks..

If you go to any shows in the DC area, let me know, I might be interested.
