Hello everyone,

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I haven't had a moment to do anything. I have been waiting since October for GM Nationals and with a week to go, I am no wheres near finished with the car. To boot, it looks like cr*p after the long winter it went through. I have a limited time to work between now and next week (Im working all week) so I have to work with what I have unfortunately. Never was able to purchase a PC so I am going to need to work with my Sears buffer (pics below). I have swirls and random scrathes all over the paint, not to mention how dull it looks; I hope what I have will sufice... Take a look at the pictures below and the list of stuff I do have, and let me know what you think the recipie to get the best finish is going to be,

Dan

Minus the deep scratches (which are being corrected professionally on Wed) the swirl marks and random scratches just below the Impala lettering is what most of the car looks like,... my camera hides alot, sorry

Wash, Clay, compound (you may have to go get something stronger than ZPC), coat of Z5Pro with ZFX. Next day add a coat of Z2Pro, and the night before you leave try the Z8. The bottom line is all the Zaino looks nice, but if you don't compound it right you will not be happy. So I wouldn't worry about the Zaino but rather go get a good swirl remover, that's the most important thing.

Can anyone recommend a good swirl remover that I can buy locally? Napa carrys 3M is that stuff any good,.... of course theres meguiars????

Oh, and where can I go to get some new pads,... mine are looking pretty ratty?

#80 if you can find it is good, I personally don't care for DACP it gums up too much in my opinion. 3m is always good. You can sometimes find pads where ever you can buy machines. Lowes or home depot, places like that, but the best ones like compounds should be bought online. Good luck

You need a velcro backing plate(looks like you might have one) and either Megs yellow or LC white or german green pads. Keep the rpms btween 1000 and 1500 or low speed setting. ZPC should remove most marring. With a rotary I'd be hesitant to step up to a compound without experience.

Unfortunately there is no way to adjust the speed accurately on this thing,... it is trigger controlled only so I don't have any idea how fast its actually going,

any ideas?

If it's only one speed don't worry about it, that thing would be way under the rpm's of a 10to 12 amp machine. Rotary's are not hard at all, especially if you first learn on one instead of learning on a PC. Just keep the machine moving slowly, don't stop and don't move it fast, also don't apply pressure. Speed + Pressure = Heat. After the polish disappears the first time, feel the panel and gauge your temp. Try your ZPC first you might not need anything else.

No Home Depot doesn't have good polishing pads, but the probably have polishing pads, good ones need to be bought online for the most part. I once searched every store around for pads and only came up wool and some white polsihing pads. They get the job done, but I'd rather use some good edge or lake counties bought online. Email lake county and ask them if they have any local retailers. Lake Country Manufacturing Inc.

I have used this particular rotary buffer before but it was on a white car which is much more forgiving.

As for the ZPC I think I will give that a try first. I did, however, find an old bottle of Meguiars #83 on the shelf at home. I was looking at the cut scale and it seems that meguiars rates it at a 6 cut,... upon reading the bottle I learned it is "slightly abrasive." Is this going to be too rough a cut for the whole car? Like I said, I am going to try the ZPC first but if that doesn't work, is the Meg 83# really safe to use?

Anybody got any do's and don'ts i should know about?

Thanks for the help guys,

Dan

P.S. I also scored some white "HI-BUFF" pads, anyone heard of them?
