Zaino - About to be first time user... Any tips ?

Greetings,



I have only posted on this board a few times, but have been a long time lurker...



I have a 1989 Porsche 928 in Silver Metallic and considering the age of the car, the finish is in very good shape. I have gone through many of the various systems available, from Klasse to Zymol (I love the smell of that stuff...) and have been pretty satisfied with the results I have been getting, so no flame wars here. I have pretty much equiped myself with all of the tools needed for extensive detailing sessions with the beast.



I just wanted to experiment with the different systems and that has lead me to ordering some items from Zaino. When they come in, what can I expect ? Any tips for a newbie Zaino user ?



And lastly, am I now getting into something akin to an addiction ?

Do a search for "Nicks Zaino tips" or something like that. Its a pretty long thread about all the in's and out's of Zaino usage.



Zaino has a steep but short learning curve. Its pretty easy to master once you've tried it. Don't be afraid to make a mistake; we've all done it with Zaino. Just learn the basics then give it a try. You'll figure out the rest as you go along.
 
I bet you know more than most when using a product for the first time! :)



The things about Z that I have learned...



"Whoa! You used too much." Very thin coats.



If you aren't using ZFX (which I'm not), wait until the next day or second day, to add another coat.



Buy two bottles of Z6



But the most important thing that I have learned is that the surface prep IS the MOST important thing.

Thanks for the reply. I have read (and printed) "Nick's Tips". That should be a great help. Probably the biggest reason for trying Zaino is to get at least some reflectivity from the silver paint.

Indeed surface prep IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!! With that said it is rather fool proof. Just make sure that you go thin. I repeat go thin and layer like crazy! What I did is the following:

Dawn wash

Clay

Rewash (the only time I rewash is when I zaino after claying)

Z6 the car down

Spray some light Z6 on your applicator then start Zing

I can get 3-5 coats on a midsize import out of 1oz of Zaino.

What I like to do is start on a Friday after work. Do all your prep then do three coats. The Sat three coats and Sunday three coats. Then you have a HELL OF A BASE! Then every time I wash usually 1 - 3 times a week I make up a small batch of Zaino with ZFX or I put it on the car without the ZFX and get up a bit early before work and buff it off then hit the shower and off to the office!
 
I finally joined the Zaino bandwagon this weekend. I followed all the tips and think I did pretty well. The tip of lightly spraying the applicator before starting also really helped. I only got 2 coats out of 1 oz on my 328is BMW so I have to work on my technique. I was able to buff the residue, but it was not a simple wipe off and took some elbow grease. I think next time I'll definitely be able to get 3 coats. It's a learning curve like anything else.



FUEL, I like your tip about putting on a coat after work without ZFX and then buffing in the morning. I wanted to put on another coat but not use the ZFX.



My car has been in the garage for over a week since I started the complete detail. Time for the pictures and a drive. I will start a new thread with all my experiences and post pics later this week. Good luck.
